Wake Up! It's the Sunday Thread for June 29, 2025

It's hard to believe that June is almost over. Summer arrived with a vengeance -- with thunderstorms and heat waves -- and we past the midway point of the year!

My fitness routines have earned me what I think is a stress fracture in my right ankle. Combined with my aging hip, I'm feeling like an old man. The only cure for a stress fracture is rest and relaxation, and that's just not the way I want to spend my days, so I'm likely exacerbating the issue by continuing to walk and run. Sigh.

Today is the usual: Church, lunch, some guitar practice, some afternoon baseball, and a day of rest. I'm working out a song I want to learn for which there isn't any available music. It's tough sledding because the changes vary from verse to verse. There's no sheet music, tabs (it's not a guitar piece) or even AI that seems to be able to help, so I'm back to my teenage years simply playing a few bars over and over, writing them down, and making the best of it. That's another thing that's hard to believe: That's the way we used to do it before the Internet!

So, I wish everyone a cool, peaceful Sunday, wherever you are!

Good morning! Recovering from a week-long conference in Florida. School Board Trainers from around the country get together once a year to share and have fun. Being we are all extroverts, we don;t need much to entertain each other. This was my 23rd conference (first in 1994) and I've gone from the newbie to the oldest one there... Got to see a lot of old friends and make new ones... and learned a lot, as usual. I've been very fortunate to have found a career that gives me purpose and validation. Several of my colleagues didn't come this year due to retirement - I must have been asked a dozen times, "When is it my turn?". My only response was - "Not yet - I'm having way too much fun to leave now!"

Had a frustrating trip down and back... planes broken, flights delayed and flying around Tampa for an hour due to weather. Also sat on the runway heading out f or an hour. The worst thing was my Kindle lost all its books when I went from Airplane Mode to normal... Luckily the phone app worked, but that's no fun reading on - I researched the snot out of it when I finally got home - none of the recommended fixes worked. Then I plugged my question into Google Gemini and had an answer in seconds that got me back and running!

Today I need to try and get the lawn mowed before it gets too hot and spend more time with my Acoustasonic. I'm really enjoying this guitar! I adjusted the neck angle on it and it now plays even better!

Hope your week is a good one - be safe on the fourth!

weather roller coaster is climbing the hill today. Triple digits last Tuesday to not even 70 on Saturday and yes, of course it rained. Well, drizzled would be more accurate.

Plumber came this week, shower stall and piping are in. Week from tomorrow the electrician begins. In theory, it should be done by the end of July. It's looking like the nephew is getting put upstairs and I get the suite downstairs. While I hadn't planned on actually living down there, at this point I'll take it if it means I get to play more.

Speaking of playing, I finally got the whistle block on the hearing aids shut off. A month ago, I had a feedback issue when answering/making phone calls addressed. The intern who serviced my HAs turned the whistle block back on but didn't tell me. It wasn't until I got to the parking lot and unlocked my car when I heard that familiar and very unwanted warble on the car's beeping. As it would happen, I didn't pick up a guitar until 10 days later and sure enough, the firsts note I played warbled. Anything above open A string was treated as feedback by the whistle block. Grrr. Went up Thursday 180 mile round trip, saw the audiologist doctor and got it shut off.

I brought my CV50 Tele this time and made sure the HAs functioned the way I wanted. Went to the campus food court for a bite to eat afterwards. As I slung my gig bag over my shoulder, one of the hospital employees in scrubs asked me what I had in the bag. We talked guitars, he has a Squier strat & fretless bass and frequented Sweetwater more than his wife appreciated. We commiserated about GAS. I said have your guitars shipped to a buddy's house, take an empty gig bag out and bring the new guitar home in it. He said that's a great idea and his drummer buddy lives nearby. I hope I didn't get the youngun in (more) trouble.

Went and looked at a house built on some property that I bidded on last year. Unfortunately they split the lot and the house needs another 150sq ft to fit our needs. Took in my 335 to get new pups and wiring harness put in.

Was planning on playing the JM this week, but the setlist changed. Grabbed the Gretsch yesterday and it was close, but not quite there for the group I?m playing with. Tried the LPC with Staple/P90, then my 60 CS Tele called out to me. Since I put a 4 way switch in it, it?s really a bad azz. Yep it got the nod.

First set with today was great. It?s quickly ascending to number 1. I need to put a 4 way in my 52 CS Tele (while I like the blend circuit, live it?s just not as practical). Also thinking about one in my 70 CS Tele Thin sporting a HB in the neck and a Bigsby.

I most certainly do, though my life has taken quite a unexpected turn and I've been too busy to post regularly

Traded in two old bass amps I had and bought a Fender Rumble 200.
At 35 pounds, with a 15" speaker, it's quite easy to carry around. I just hope 200 watts is enough.

The bass playing is going well. Seems to come naturally to me and just might be the thing that keeps me musically active through my geezer years. Slowly but surely getting rid of all my gear.

I have decided to give away all my lighting gear and camera gear to someone deserving. I just do photography anymore, and don't really miss it.

Feels good to be purging all this stuff.

Bicycle ride today, 25 miles on the Airline Trail in Connecticut, and doing the hunt for a used gas grill. Having a little soiree' Friday and need to feed the attendees.

All Big Fun in the Berkshires!
