This is absolutely the only thing about a Tele that I dislike. Who in the Holy F thought this was a good design idea? Leo? George? Tiny Tim? Let me at 'em, corpses or not, let me at 'em.

no need to desecrate the non-living, but I totally agree on the original input cup design. There's a much better version out there, I'm 99% sure I got one of them for my tele build. I sure hope I did because like you said, not Leo's greatest idea. Electrosocket is the way to go, historical accuracy be hanged.

"no need to desecrate the non-living"---made me choke on my coffee. That's probably one of the my favorite sentences ever.

I'm not sure if I got lucky or figured it out, but I put a regular Tele jack cup in my T-Style when I built it over 17 years ago and haven't had a problem with it.
Most likely, I'm awho got lucky once!
100% agreed on the electrosocket. I have a couple builds under my belt and I've used them, plus retrofitted my Tele.
I'd never use the stamped tin one again.

Alan Arkin was a real genius. Loved him in "Catch-22"......

Back to the topic, I think the way the Jack is mounted is interesting but not very sturdy. And I've never figured out why they didn't make the cup a lot shallower once right-angle plugs became popular.
Yeah, cogs. I like the Strat input; LOVE Gibson inputs. They're just right there! I bought a nut driver from StewMac specifically for the Tele's input. The nut loosens so easily on Teles that you have to check it occasionally just to make sure it's not falling off.
Alan Arkin is still breathing and has played some fun roles in his later career. Undersung.

The Les Paul's jack-mounting method is no prize. I've busted at least a dozen of those plastic jack plates over the years. The metal plate was a demonstrable improvement but it's still susceptible to damage.

I read these threads with amusement and wonder.
After decades of wielding Telecasters everywhere from dive bars to county fairs I've never, ever had an issue with a Tele input cup. Neither has any other player I personally know who uses them.
Somehow on the internet however it's become the scourge of guitardom.
Stratocaster jacks, however; fail at an alarming rate - it's the Strat's Achilles heel but nobody makes a big deal of it. Heck, I carry a nut driver in my bag just for the inevitable loose Stratocaster jack, as do many other players.

Interesting. I've had my strat for 20 years, and I have never had an issue with the jack. The stock on on my Tele would routinely loosen up. Till I installed the Switchcraft.
Also not a fan of the plastic Les Paul ones - on my '02 Standard, that thing broke in under a year. I got the Gibson chrome (nickel? I don't remember.) one to replace it and haven't had an issue.

Amazingly, I've never had an issue with the Strat's "jack boat". But it's something I check each time I change strings or perform some other routine maintenance procedure. And like you, I bring a small assortment of commonly-used tools whenever I play out "just in case".

The nut drivers are worth every penny spent. You're right about the Strat boats, and they're reason enough to buy a set.

I always make sure my Stratocasters have a lock washer that's nice & fresh at some point when I'm dinking around w/them, & I'll p oint the tip contact on the jack is at "six o'clock".
Telecasters, on the other hand, are relatively new to me & seems so primitive. Just a little bit of friction holding it in there, lol

Lol
I always thought that a star washer had external teeth, & a lock washer had internal teeth. But I know most folks think of a lock washer as having a split
