custom colours? A fad bound to fade?

I never thought much about guitar colour (pardon the Canadian spelling) in the past. A guitar was a guitar and it was all about sound and feel. Then I got a Sonic Blue Strat body, mainly for the weight (nice light alder) and put a maple neck on it with one of those pumpkiny-orange antique lacquers. I just loved the way it looked! Not long after, I got a Rutters Tele in Shell Pink ('ish, it has a lot of peach in it) with a black guard and wow, I still love it.

But the other day, I was looking at both and wondering if all of these sexy colours are going to lose their allure. They were rare back in the day, partly because they were a little more expensive and maybe that is part of their cache now. Also, I would venture that back then most folks simply liked the sunburst on Strats and the plain butterscotch on Teles. The turn back to custom colours seemed to start in the 90s (?). What will the next generation think about Sea Foam Green, Shell Pink, etc.?

    Just thinkin' out loud.

I like the diversity but I draw the line at sparkle finishes.

I'll leave the "sparklies" to the likes of Liberace and Elton John.

But otherwise, if Leo painted Strats with any of the canned Duco colors back in the day, I'm cool with them (a bit tepid about Shell Pink though).

As far as custom colors go, different colors will fade in & out of popularity but they are here to stay. It's harder to paint a sunburst finish, & solid colors cover up flaws & mineral streaks in wood that would otherwise be unuseable w/transparent finishes. In other words, custom colors are now cheaper! They just don't come cheaper from the manufacturers

I just bit the bullet on a set of re-finish supplies from Guitar ReRanch...have a Strat body that I stripped and am now going to give it a go on painting it.

Is Daphne Blue a custom color?

You know this is going to require a new thread, right?

Posting pics of the whole process is mandatory, señor.

But of course...it will be my first shot at it, so shall see what becomes of it.

Don't sweat it. If you have any problems, turn it into an amp. You seem to do pretty good w/those
    lol

I think having all the color choices is a glorious thing. I even liked the spin art Strats from about 15 years ago (wish they'd done one in a lefty). I wish we lefties had more color choices, says the man with 3 sunburst Fenders...

Was Marilyn Monroe a sex symbol? Indeed, Daphne is one of my faves. And the new thread is going to be fun.

I cool with it, as long as they don't bring back the antigua or splattercaster finishes.

brrrrr Antigua. But I liked the splattercasters, just for fun. I wouldn't have one as a second or third Strat, but if I were a collector...

Re: custom colours? A fad bound to fade?

I love the custom colors but not so much the sparkle finishes. I've been trying for some time now to get a strat body in a custom color I like without breaking the bank. Fortunately I'm not in a hurry because there are plenty of people willing to pay a pretty penny or high twenty thou to buy these bodies. If I had the physical space to do spraying, sanding etc then I'd probably take a shot at finishing my own blank bodies. Right now that isn't happening.

One of the former receptionists at my chiropractor had a p-bass in this beautiful bluish green metallic/candy color that I simply have not been able to identify. Best I can describe it somewhere between sherwood green and taos turquoise metallic. Pictures over the internet are not the best gauge for subtle differences in the blue/green groups of colors, they really need to be seen on bodies in person to properly delineate amongst them.

Sounds suspiciously like Ocean Turquoise Metallic, Dan.
