    Uh, oh

A guy from work wants to get rid of his 80's MIJ '62 Custom in Sunburst. Excellent + condition.

He wants me to check it out over the weekend, so I can check Ebay for values, etc.

Now it's sitting in my jeep.

I need another guitar like a hole in the head.

    Re: Uh, oh

The cravings due to GAS are intense but short-lived. I suggest lying down on the floor, taking long, deep breaths, with a brown paper bag over your head, until the attack passes.

While it probably won't help, to be fair I can't see how it could make things any worse, either.

Don't think it'll help, unless I've got one of these.

Pardon my ignorance, but can someone tell me what "GAS" actually stands for? I know it relates to being addicted to spending money on guitars/gear, but I'm curious...

Does it stand for Guitar Addiction Spending?

Yet nothing anyone, not even you, compares it to is anything like "a hole in the head."
Even if you happen to need or have "a hole in the head," that Tele's not a bad idea.
    Because there's really no similarity.

I liked mine, too. CAR metalic, like John Flansburg's. It had EMG's when I got it, which I replaced with TX Specials, which had just come out.

The lead pickup crapped out, and I replaced it with a DiMarzio Pre-B1.

The last DiMarzio product I've ever bought, but that's a longer story.

After that I sold it to my best friend. It's pretty whipped now.

    Re: Uh, oh

I did a bit of looking on the web.

I think he was only looking for ~$400 for it, which I could swing, if I had to have it.

Apparently, they go for more, when you can find one unmessed with.

I should let him know the real value, so he can get the max $....from somebody else.

That way he can buy the Les Paul he's always wanted, but has never been able to afford.

He'll probably want me to help him sell it.

Maybe what I should do is show him how to hook up his own Ebay account, so I don't end up being a wholesaler for his storage unit.

Offer him $400. Be honest with him. Tell him he could probably get more for it, but that's all it's worth to you.

If he want's to sell it online, help him set up an account and let him deal with the hassle. You don't want to be caught in the middle.

    I could do that, but:
    • I really don't have $400 to spend. I mean I could get it, but I've just bought the 12-string, plus diamond earrings for Mrs. Kap'n for our anniversary, I need new tires and CD player for the Jeep......
    • My real mental justification for buying it (like a lot of my equipment purchases) would be, "hey, if it doesn't work, I could just flip it and make a few bucks." I'd feel pretty slimy flipping it in six months, and making money he could have gotten...ESPECIALLY if I sold it on-line. He'd be the guy helping me pack it into the box.
There will be other guitars. And I can feel better about helping John get his Les Paul that much quicker.

    Re: Uh, oh

There. I did it. I divorced myself from it.

I told John that it might be worth more than the $400, and I would clean it up for him, take some pictures, help him write the description, and help him get set up with an Ebay account. I'm also doing it for an old AKG drum mic he's got lying around.

That should help quell the GAS pains this weekend.

But it's been modified over the last few years to mean "Gear Aquisition Syndrome" Much further reaching and can include amps, mics, recording equipment, etc.

You're really never safe from GAS.

    GAS Cured!

Well I went home a little early, and put it through it's paces, through my Bandmaster, with it's newly aquired 10A125s, is now a sonic magnifying glass. The Strat and the Gretsch have taken on new dimension, and my cheaper guitars, well, sound even cheaper.

    but I digress.....

The first thing I notice is how tiny the neck is on this. While a few years ago, I would have loved this neck, it just isn't there for me now. About 2/3 scale of the current Am. Series.

Fire up the amp. Wow, this bridge pickup is thin sounding. And way microphonic. Not slightly, but very. Much better with both pickups. Neck is microphonic too, but not in a bad way. If I loved this guitar, that's not a problem.

I dial it in a bit more, and play. Oh, yeah the knobs. They look OK, but feel lightweight but from what I remember, the plating's really thin, and will flake shortly. I could change those. While I'm at it I could change the pots, too. Oh, but then I'll have to change the tounge depressor too.

While I'm at it, I could change the bridge. I do have a compensated box lying around. More work.

Screw it. I don't love the neck. There will most definately be other teles. I made the right move.

how many speakers of what wattage are you running and at what point, if at all, are you beginning to get speaker breakup? i'm very interested as i am experimenting myself w/ various amps and spkrs configurations, including a 40 watt Fender head (Super) similar to your Bandmaster. i need to coin a sub-category phrase for my affliction, SOS maybe, Speaker-Overhaul-Syndrome...

Gris, the amp is not a Bandmaster head, but a clone of a 5E7 ('55-'59) tweed Bandmaster. It's about 30W, and I'm running three 10A125 speakers in the 20W version, no dope, which are WeberVSTs version of a Jensen P10Q. These speakers aren't completely broken in in yet, but there's little or no speaker breakup. This is contrasted with the Weber Signiture 10S speakers I had in there (and one's in the mail to you). With those speakers, there was significant breakup. I acutally didn't realize how clean the amp actually was until I changed the speakers.
