Neil Young and old Fender amps

I know that a lot of you guys love the old Fender amps, especially the tweed deluxes. Are those the ones that Neil Young uses? Right now I'm listening to Cortez the Killer, a great song with great guitar. Is that the lead sound of a cranked old fender amp?

he uses tweed deluxes quite a bit. for one tour he used just a fender champ, miced it, and that is what was going through the p.a. but if you play a tweed deluxe, you'll hear a "neil" tone come out if you use a paul or 6120.

I think NY uses 6L6's in his deluxe, and has a fan to blow air into it & keep it cool enough

he also uses an old fender reverb unit

and has a whole bunch of effects built into that big red box

since about 1972 (?) or so.....not sure when he recorded "cortez" ??

not sure if the deluxe is hooked up to that old 2x12 magnatone (?) cab he uses either, but they're all miked live

someone chime in if I'm mistaken

I think you are right, Bolero. He's also got a thing called the Whizzer than actually turns the knob(s) of the amp for him when he wants to clean up a bit.

yeah, I had some great pictures of his whole setup ( inclusing the whizzer!!) a while back, I'll see if I can dig them up & maybe post them.

I am a HUGE Neil Young fan, that guy just knocks me out!!

he's got such a killer electric gtr sound....and then he has all those AMAZING, mellow acoustic tunes too, on the flipside.

the guy is just a monster songwriter

ahead of his time too...he's been miking that little tweed deluxe through the PA for 30 years, and just recently people are realizing that's such a good way to go, live.

Thanks for the info. I Just picked up one of his CDs yesterday, Ragged Glory, and you can clearly see the big red footpedal on the cover. I think I picked up the right CD for guitar - it has lots of extended jams on it - great guitar tone. Reminds me a bit of Cortez the Killer.
Is it just Neil Young that plays lead, or does the other guitarist also do some leads?

    It's pretty much all Neil.

Not to spend your money for ya, but you might want to check out "Tonight's the Night" and "Everybody Knows this is Nowhere" as well. Maybe you have them already. Danny Whitten (who plays on "Everybody") was one heck of a rhythm player. Lots of guitar on that album. Neil played a Broadcaster on "Tonight's" but of course it sounds exactly like Neil.

"On the Beach" is another good one, it's a mess but I still like it a lot.

The other thing that Neil is doing now and has been preaching for the last 10 years is a return to analog recording. He is a true tone seeker and knows exactly what he's doing with it. He's no dummy!

If you want to hear an hour and a half of neil just fuckin' around with his guitar watch the movie "Dead Man"
Lot's of "Ry Cooder-ish" electric guitar atmospheric stuff. Pretty gritty and cool.

I just strarted using a Peavy Classic 20 at rehearsal with my Classic Rock band.Ive been getting some Neil tones from it with my LP.I wasnt really tryin to cop Neils tone, just tryin to get some nice crunchy tones at low volume. The Classic 20 has a lot of the same tone as a Tweed Deluxe for a lot less $$$.I think the CyberTwin is an adaptation of NYs Mixmaster.Maybe someday Fender will get it right.I gotta find my old copy of Rust Never Sleeps.I need to hear Powderfinger again.......

Looks like there is a soundtrack:
    http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/AS...roduct-details

Apparently the main theme as heard in the movie is not on the soundtrack. The soundclips don't do it justice either. Best heard in context with the movie.

With that in mind I'd say, rent the DVD and watch the movie for full effect.

It's a Jarmusch Black and White western with Johnny Depp. I think it's Robert Mitchum's last film. Richard Harris may be in it too. It's a real moody film. the music is great for it.

    excellent, thanks a lot!!

I dig that moody gtr stuff

Ry Cooder has done some cool soundtracks too, I've got a 2cd compilation thing ( oops, sory, just saw you already mentioned this, above!! )

and I just borrowed a CD from my brother that has a bunch of old Clint Eastwood spaghetti western tunes on it ( Ennio Morricone )

And you haven't even heard it yet! That's a fan.

Seriously, don't listen to it without watching the movie. Unless you don't like Jarmusch movies sense of time. Drawn out, tense, moody. that scratchy overdriven guitar twanging out repetitive themes. Very Ry Cooder in a Paris Texas kind of way.

I surfed past "Dead Man" late one night on cable and immediately pricked up my ears when I heard the back ground music.

I had to stay up and watch the whole fucking movie to see the credits and confirm it was Neil and then it took me forever to find the soundtrack.

    Good stuff..........

well, I watched it last night

    great movie!!

one of those weird, dark humour, artsy flicks

I thought the 2nd half sort of dragged a bit...but mainly because I wanted to find out WTF happened at the end!!

    some excellent scenes though

    "....stupid f***ing white man" LOL!!

I think it probably portrayed a more realistic image of the western frontier, than a lot of romanticized hollywood fodder

was surprised to see Iggy Pop in there too! haha.

oh, yeah, Neil Young's sparse soundtrack worked great...I esp liked the train bits

but he got some cool, eerie sounds with (what sounded like?? ) the tweed, reverb, LP, and echoplex

Just found out about this thread at the LPF.

So, the effects are just reverb and echoplex?

well, I dunno for sure, but that's what it sounded like to me....

    I didn't hear his killer-fuzz-from-hell, I don't think?

but I've only watched it once so far.

I wish the DVD had a music-only track in the extras menu...

If you see Neil's "Greendale" DVD, which was on cable last night, you'll see that he's got about a half dozen nice big box Marshall heads in his practice space/studio, along with tweeds and blondes of every type. If I had his money, my garage would look just like his!
    Several guitars in different colors
    Things to make them fuzzy
    Things to make them louder
    orange picks

ps apparently NY used the marshalls for a while in the ealry 90's (?) but they were way too loud & he started to screw his hearing up, so he went back to the deluxe.

this was in the "Shakey" book somewhere...interesting book. although I think the author is a dork!!
