    Gig tonight.

Tonight we play at Ugly's Tequila bar. If the name of the club isn't scary enough, we are the experimental country rock band. The usually have the twenty something crown and play hard rock and alternative rock. There was some talk of switching over to country rock (marshall tucker, Brooks and dunn, etc...) well I hope we don't get killed or something worse, like the whole bar emptying out.

I will let you know how it went.

If you are in the area, stop by.

    I am venting.

Well what can I say. We ended up getting scerwed on payment It was explained to me by the band leader that we were getting a flat rate and a percentage of the door once the flat payment was covered. It turns out we were getting the door and then just a percentage after a certain amount was reached. Our leadership let them put their own people on the door. I personally brought in more people than we got paid for. I think the door man was skimming. I can't believe that with all the experience this band leader is suppose to have, that this was allowed to happen.

As for the music, The train wrecks happened when I was playing a solo. For some reason the rhythm guitar and bass would start playing different things from each other. The R-guitar was playing wrong chords on some songs and the bass player was playing in wrong keys and the drummer was draggin. Of course this affected my performance and sent me into a non-energetic cluster fuck of chords and riffs. Our female singer towards the last few songs started getting the audience going again and brought our energy level up too. I'm sure I am making it sound worse than it was but I am not completely happy about it.

Now our leadership is trying to book us for a five set New Years eve gig for only $70.00 per man. what are they thinking.

Sounds like their 'not' thinking. I've always said once the precedent is set for bargin gig prices it just takes that much longer to get good money. I believe it also hurts other muscians in the area from getting decent money. I wouldn't even consider playing a five set gig for $70.00.

    Best of luck m-n-m.

We're just weekend warriors. An outside manager or agent wouldn't benefit our situation. with the experience in our band, we should have been able to handle it. they made a rookie mistake, and I am sure it won't happen again.

I just wish they wouldn't throw away a prime money making event such as new years.

You don't need a REAL manager, just one of your "groupies" you make the "manager" so they can have a title and hang out with the band and get free drinks.

They have a stake so they watch your back for you when your playing...

The bar owner does not have to know, they just know your "manager" is watching their every move....

Nothing like a Trainwreck to get people trying harder and paying attention. Specially if they see you're not happy with them. Last time this happened I just packed up and left afterwards without collecting my pay. I was sooooo ashamed and embarassed.

Make sure every musician in the area knows you got screwed out of your payment. You can download standard contracts off the internet. I highly recommend this. It makes club-owners try a little harder.

The last time this happened to my old band, when the club owner pulled the bait and switch, we pulled the "well you just fired your band for the evening" move.

The next day, we called all our other club owners to explain what had happened. We thought it was better to be proactive, upfront and explain our side of it before they heard through the grapevine that that "Fucking blues band" had walked out.

We didn't lose any business as a result of what had happened, in fact, one owner booked us an extra night to make up for our lost revenue.

If you have a good product and a following, you will get work. You don't need scumfuck asswipe club owners who screw musicians.

I have been privy to every kinda club gig in the world (almost, it is a big world) even played in a bank lobby at lunch time. The only thing I know for sure is if you are playing for any part of the door then YOUR people gotta do the counting. I can't remember the times we played to a packed club and then found out the Hot chics all get in free and the club owner has 25 cousins and they all decided to show up tonight. Having said all that, I still love playin' out.

I thought there was a minimum guarentee. The band leader fucked up. it's as simple as that. If I would have known. what was really going on, we would have had our own people at the door.

Hence, the written contract. Do it.
