A friend is giving me a turntable, and I'll get it today. Until I moved to Germany in 93, I owned over 1000 albums and as many 45s. I couldn't afford to take the bulk of them with me, so I kept all Beatles and then a mere 100 that were special to me. Of course I regret that. But happier days now.
I am excited to play the records I still have. I did buy fresh copies of Abbey Road and Sgt Pepper. Next? Why Who's Next and Dark Side of the Moon of course.
For now, I have a nice little collection, and I'm going to organize my albums today, see what forgotten gems are there.
I also have on loan my Mother's 78rpm collection from the 40s. Most of it is myeh, but there are some gems in there. In any case, it'll be fun to listen to them. I'll probably put some of the best on a flash drive to give to her--my 81 year old mother is glued to her PC.
Taking care of records, keeping them scratch free, dusting them, washing them with solution--all of this and you get a bump in the record in any case. Then you have to turn the LP over after 20 minutes or so. : I don't miss the glory days of vinyl.
I don't have the kind of quality system I had in the 70s, a Pioneer system with an amazing turntable. Clarity and warmth were abundant. Now good systems cost so much that you have to settle for these efficient but soul-less "audio systems." So the sound I'll get out of the turntable can only be as good as my "system."
Nevertheless, I am excited about listening to the wax. Now to decide which to listen to first.
