    NTD (new turntable day)

A friend is giving me a turntable, and I'll get it today. Until I moved to Germany in 93, I owned over 1000 albums and as many 45s. I couldn't afford to take the bulk of them with me, so I kept all Beatles and then a mere 100 that were special to me. Of course I regret that. But happier days now.

I am excited to play the records I still have. I did buy fresh copies of Abbey Road and Sgt Pepper. Next? Why Who's Next and Dark Side of the Moon of course.

For now, I have a nice little collection, and I'm going to organize my albums today, see what forgotten gems are there.

I also have on loan my Mother's 78rpm collection from the 40s. Most of it is myeh, but there are some gems in there. In any case, it'll be fun to listen to them. I'll probably put some of the best on a flash drive to give to her--my 81 year old mother is glued to her PC.

Taking care of records, keeping them scratch free, dusting them, washing them with solution--all of this and you get a bump in the record in any case. Then you have to turn the LP over after 20 minutes or so. : I don't miss the glory days of vinyl.

I don't have the kind of quality system I had in the 70s, a Pioneer system with an amazing turntable. Clarity and warmth were abundant. Now good systems cost so much that you have to settle for these efficient but soul-less "audio systems." So the sound I'll get out of the turntable can only be as good as my "system."

Nevertheless, I am excited about listening to the wax. Now to decide which to listen to first.

    Now we're talking.

my old folks had a very good Sony system back in the early 80s, I grew up listening to their records on it. they had a nice collection of classical music, at least 700 LPs.

my very first contacts with rock music were the only guys my father accepted to listen to, the Beatles and Rick Wakeman.

When CD technology arrived, they sold the system and gave away all records.

I still love vinyl and as I don't have many (I much prefer the old ones), I am still rebuilding my collection, and got a cheap turntable I can plug into a home theater... Makes me pretty happy though.

I'm still listening to the system I put together back in '87.

Pioneer VSX5000 A/V receiver (with built-in dBX), BSR 10-band graphic EQ, JBL 4312 studio monitors, Cerwin-Vega 15-inch powered sub-woofer. Four hundred watts total providing superb performance for both audio playback and home theater missions. I do have a Pioneer linear-track turntable but it seldom sees any use.

It might be mostly psychological, but the music seems more live when listening to vinyl, even through the inexpensive Sony "component" system that I've had since the mid '80s.

Sometime we get together and listen to records on my friend's high end system (I think it cost more than his 911) and the difference is definitely more than psychological.

I have a Philips Integrated amp with a Dual 714Q Turntable (with a Micro Acoustics 530mp cartridge), a Carver tuner and a Denon CD player. They connect to a couple AR-11B loudspeakers. obtained when I worked for Sam Goody back in the golden days of audio. It was great working for Sam because records were cheap. While it could be considered a pain to play records, it was more of a ritual - Discwasher, play, repeat. The Philips was a stand in after I Replaced my Advent receiver, (I also have a pair of the original Advent speakers, too).

I have old, pristine copies of Physical Graffiti and Exile on Main St. I had forgotten that I had them.

I spent 20 minutes listening to the first side of Sgt. Pepper. I don't have the greatest system, but it sounded fantastic. The turntable is an Audio Technica. Beautiful machine it is too.

I still have my old Garrard 95B turntable, and records up to the early 80's, I started buying CD's then. (Still use my original Pioneer CD player). I have digitized many of my albums, but not all.
A few years ago, one of my customers was moving into an apartment, (her husband had died), and asked me to come get his system. I ended up with some great 70's components, Thorens turntable, (needs a belt), Sherwood reciever, and a great Akai GX series cassette. The speakers, I can't recall, but they are large, with dual 10" woofers, that do sound great! I also ended up with a box of albums, (show tunes, acoustic guitar virtuosos, etc.)

Found a great pre-commercial success George Benson live album. The playing is so good, and it sounds great on the turntable.

This is a pic, albeit terribly blurry, of my Beatles / Solo collection.
