    Robert Cray, Any Love?

Went down the street to my local shop to investigate a Hanson Chicago P90. Played it for a long time among others SGs, Les Paul, Esquire... I just didn't warm up to anything. The guitar I remember was the Robert Cray strat. Maybe I just like the strat tone in general, but for the price it seemed like a very nice item. No trem, and no block, string through, noiseless PUs. Used for under $500. Any comments?

That's supposed to be a nice guitar. I don't believe the noiseless pickups are original.

I thought they came originally with Texas Specials or something? But hey, if it sounds good with the noiseless, who cares.

What did the Henson sound like? I believe they are the company that makes pups for Lakland basses.

The Hanson was awesome... a very nice guitar. I played through a HRDX so... I didnt get a true test, geeze those amps are ...not my favorite. anyway, the finish seemed a bit thick, PUs had a distinctive tone, frets we excelent, but there was something that kept me from getting comfortable with it. Perhaps it was the hollow body / neck set up with the strings to far from the body and pick guard... you know ... strat, tele and acoustics are all fairly close to the body... and the neck didnt quite feel right up by the neck to ME for some reason. It was a D shape... But A very nice guitar, I would say seek one out its worth consideration.

Correct. The RC uses a specially-voiced set of single-coils unique to the model. The middle and neck are similar in tone and appearance to the 57/62 equivalents while the bridge features non-staggered poles offering a tone that seems to be a cross between a Texas Special and a Fat '50 (hot but with less grit and a smoother high end). I've used loaded RC pickguards in a number of builds for myself and upgrades for clients.

If you want a hardtail with traditional Fender appointments, the RC is it.

thanks, so the noisless PUs were not the Robert Cray's? - - I keep thinking about the Hanson anyway. It was very cool. I gotta get back over there and play both of them through something other than a HRDX.

I love that store, BTW. They have a lot of great guitars and have always given me good service. I wish there was a guitar store half as good where I live now.

TUGBOAT - its right down the street, I can walk there. The shop changed ownership early this year but all the same guys work there. I got an esquire rather than the cray or hanson. The esquire was $450 I discovered this morning it has a loller 52 in it, the neck is real nice.. CTS pots, cocked way wiring that I dont think is correct.

The last time I was down that way they were still closed... Really disappointed me but the better half was elated (although she tried real hard to hide it...)

Whenever she pulls that holier-than-thou shtick, put on Jimmy Thackery's "Cool Guitars" and toss ten pair of her shoes into the trash.

I'm glad they re-opened. I saw that they were closing and hated to see it. I grew up in Louisville and spent a lot of time window shopping there in college. Great independent store with personality. I had to get a few things when I was back visiting family over Thanksgiving for an old Acoustic I gave to my brother and was really excited to see that they re-opened. Played a few guitars while I was there and loved a J-45 True Vintage. So I decided to build one next. Have the neck blank and fretboard marked out and ready to cut!

I really like my Robert Cray. I have done the Gilmore mod (bridge tone control rather than middle). Plays and sounds great. Here's a link to the thread I started when I bought it.Robert Cray Strat.
