    Princeton Reverb RI Rectifier Tube

I just bought a Princeton Reverb RI and so far really like it. However, I'd like to get the amp to start breaking up at a lower volume. I was thinking of replacing the rectifier with either a 5Y3 or a 5V4. Any advice on this would be appreciated. I've searched the web and found conflicting information (ya, I know. Go figure).

    Thanks,
    Dan

The Blackface PR used a 5U4GB, which had about a 50V drop versus the 17 volt drop of the 5AR4, so in theory this would give you less headroom like you are seeking.

Looking at the spec's I don't see any reason why the 5U4GB could not be used in place of the 5AR4.

Anybody else see any reason why not?

You can use a 5U4G as long as the 5v rectifier tap on the power transformer can handle 3 amps.

    The 5AR4, 5Y3 and 5V4 draw approx. 2 amps.

    I wouldn't use a 5U4, I'd throw in a 5R4 instead.

I don't know that Fender's new iron is overbuilt to the extent that the vintage trannies were.
