Oh Man!!! I never knew Fender made amps too!!!
Mostly because they are correct for that vintage period. I think they look attractive but not necessarily more so than pearl markers, just different. Most interesting aspect of them is the endless debate on what they are actually made of. The most recent statement I've heard about this which as I recall came from someone who had a certain amount of "inside" information was that they were made from a large stock of "surplus" fiberglass floor tiles that Fender had sitting around!
How accurate are dots on the AVRI guitars compared to the real thing? Is it pricey to put some more accurate dots in?

Yes they are from asbestos floor tiles. They are what Lentz uses on his rosewood boards.
Whoops! that was it, asbestos not fiberglass.
Why do they call them clay? The color?

How much does work like that run?Originally posted by Spose
We're getting the board down to a 12 inch radius from 7.25 and popping in some 6100 fret wire to replace that thin vintage fret size. Should be nice when it's done.

Yeah thanks! I'm kind of putting the cart before the horse here, but I was thinking about changing the radius and frets on an as of yet unpurchased strat...
I just can't leave well enough alone...

I think so, they look like it so maybe everyone used to think they were made of clay???Originally posted by brianf

Sorry to say, they are not asbesto's floor tiles as the new rumor indicates.
If anyone knows how real "clay dots" react, and you think you have an idea on how to shape some old material, please contact me. Plug cutters don't work, they just rip the material apart. I have a nice load of material I just need to get shaped.
FWIW, the dots are stark white when freshly filed and sanded. Oils from the rosewood and your fingers plus natural oxidation discolor the surface of the dot to the color we all love.
