I'm a Dumbass....Help Me with This PUP Wiring

I'm trying to install a pup which paparino gave me.

It's shown in the third pic.

This is a pic of the beater bass pup and how it's wired with what appears to be a ground plate under the pup.

    More pics to follow.

The left one in the last pic?

That's the bridge pickup volume pot.

I can shoot and upload one but it'll be a few minutes.

Do you really need that one?

    Oh, and thanks.

Not really. It appears as if the stock pickup is the standard white=hot & black=ground.

What kind of pickup is the new one? Need to know so that we know what colors need to be linked, hot, & ground.

papa says it's a "neck position classic coil" by Duncan.

"humbucking dummy coil underneath the regular coil...standard wiring"

    Thanx for the scem.

But in the Duncan directions where are the red and white attached after they're combined and insulated??

They don't need to be attached to anything. They are there in case you want to install a switch between them to split the coil.

    ok, I'm a dumbass.

    The beater's pup is wired:

ground and black to the bottom of the pot (with the white wire from the pot leading to another pot)

white leads to the middle pin on the pot.

    right so far?

To swap out the pickup all you need to do is unsolder the ground (black) and hot (white) coming from the stock pickup from where they are currently soldered to. Reattach the new pickups ground (green/bare) and hot (black) to those same places. You don't have to worry about any of the other wiring assuming its functioning ok.

Glad I could help. The real time wiring tutorial was kinda fun. I'll check back in later and see how it went.

I have the pup removed and now I'm taking off the cover.

Whoever built this in the orient was very resourceful. They set the pup in parafin to secure it in the cover.

I'm boiling water in the microwave at the moment.

    Thnx, Vince!

I cracked the cheap pup cover removing the pup from it, but what the hell.

    It's a beater, isn't it? :nelson

    uh oh

    trouble

the Duncan pole pieces don't stick up as high as the beater's.

They don't even protrude through the cover.

    What now?

I'm registering on the Duncan site forum to see if anyone has a pup cover.

Evidentally, Duncan covers are made to fit.

Every do-it-yourself job has at least ONE hitch to it. This is the first one.

I wouldn't sweat it too much. Use the stock cover until you can find the right one. It'll probably look like hell but it's a beater right?

Oh, it does look like hell. I've cracked the cover, marred it by douching it with carb cleaner, and tried to polish it back out with rubbing compound!

It looks like it's been used and abused already.

So, it's cool to have the pole pieces kinda sunk down in the cover holes?

If so, I'm gonna wire that sucker UP!

You might need to crank the pickup a little higher than you're acoustomed to seeing but it won't hurt anything other than your eyes.

    Wire that bad boy up!

Ok, it got it wired and have a quiet signal out of it.

But, I think the two pups are now out of phase. I read the Duncan site FAQ:

"How can I tell if my pickups are out of phase?
With two humbuckers connected by a switch in phase pick ups will sound normal, while out of phase humbuckers will sound weak and nasal. This is because out of phase humbuckers result in a lot of low and mid frequency cancellation. With Strat and single coil type guitars being in phase is the problem and if adjacent pickups are in phase the combined selection will not be noise canceling.
This may be a confusing explanation. What we need to emphasize here is that humbuckers work because the coils are out-of-phase and the magnetic polarities are opposite. Either condition by itself will produce conflicting (out-of-phase) string signals from each coil that will result in a thin, nasal sound, but the two conditions together produce a full and powerful string signal and cancellation of most of the hum.

How can I correct out of phase pickups?
With humbuckers it can be as simple as changing the hot and ground connections or flipping the magnet. To correct phase problems with single coils is harder because the pick ups must be both magnetically and electrically out of phase, and it is next to impossible to change the magnetic orientation in single coil pick ups unless you have a magnetizer."

Since I have a hybrid Duncan stack Jbass and an El Cheapo Oriental special, my guess is they're out of phase.

Alone they sound fine, but when I roll the two vol knobs together, I get a thin, nasal tone.

Maybe this wasn't such a good idea after all, and now I HAVE to replace the bridge pup with a compatible Duncan.

    Ya think?

"Alex" at Seymour Duncan says $5 for a cover w/shipping and swap the green and black leads to deal with the out of phase problem.

I'll try that as soon as I get home from work!

Gee, this shot-in-the-dark tech stuff is so exciting.:roll

    Ooops...

Sorry you had problems wiring that bad boy. Glad it's working now. How does it SOUND?!?

Remember, it is a neck position pup (not sure if you already mentionned that.

The name is a Seymour Duncan Classic Stack Jazz Coil.

They don't make that model anymore, but it doesn't mean it wasn't a good pup. I got the 2 coils I sent you, and two just like it, for 10 bucks a piece on closeout from a local store, and those two were still kicking around. So it was "someone use them or they'll collect more dust..."

DID YOU GET THE OTHER COIL?!?

I'm seriously bummed if it didn't at least arrive in half...

Nope, never got the other pup.

But SD's sending me a cover for the one you gave me. I'll give a full tone report when I get the correct cover and adjust the pup height.

The wiring was actually simple once I pulled my head outta my ass. The out-of-phase problem was corrected by swapping the ground and lead wires, JUST LIKE THE DIRECTIONS SAID.

I'll eventually swap the bridge pup when I can scam...uhhh...I mean "when someone's generous like you" and gives me another one.

    And, thanks again, papa!!
