This is an early 1960 strat I was recently fortunate enough to acquire-
Check out the finish!

It's certainly the coolest weathering I've ever seen on a Strat- Relicing guys, eat your hearts out!

I like it!
"The lord will take two things so much alike that he would not mind choosing from them blindfold - and then for a great jest he will allow the slaves to choose."
Wow, what the heck happened to that thing. You sure do "pick up" a lot of cool stuff 1/55. Where did you find it (and how does it sound, and are there any more where that came from)?
So the Stratocaster is NOT dishwasher safe? :hee
I love guitars that have the natural "beating" like that...
"Power don't come from a badge or a gun. Power comes from lying. Lying big and gettin' the whole damn world to play along with you. Once you've got everybody agreeing with what they know in their hearts ain't true, you've got 'em by the balls."
Senator Roark - Sin City
That is the custom color "alligator finish" only offered in early 1960.:tw59 . Great mojo and a cool find!!
Dude, that is sweet!
That looks pretty wild... here's an LP to match:
Very cool!!! It almost looks like marble from ancient Greece or Rome....

That strat must have set you back a good chunk of change.

I am a relic guy...yes I like it...a LOT! :drl looks like an old street map. I'd have a heart attack if I ever something like that at a yard sale...was this a treasure 'find' or something from a shop? Nice score.
Hopeless modaholic...
Where did you find this wonderful machine?
Found it on the Bay, and no, (unfortunately!) it wasn't cheap.
(A WHOLE lot cheaper than it would've been in collector-clean shape, however!)
I've been keeping my eye out for a '59 or early '60 strat for years- Fender was doing these really thin necks during that period on the early rosewood teles & strats that I really love- (I've got small hands-)
I've had a refinished '59 Tele for fifteen years; it's a dream player, think early on it must've been played to shit like this Strat was. It's featherweight, ash body, slab fingerboard of course, and it takes off at ridiculously low volumes- and that's what put me in the mind of trying to find a Strat that was similar. I've seen a few, but usually they were too expensive, or too clean, or I was too broke at the time...
And this Strat has the same vibe as my Tele that I've been looking for! That really thin neck that I love, obviously played to death, very light, slab board of course, and that ultra-mojo finish to boot!
It's a real player, like all my guitars- that totally comfortable way-played-in vibe-
VERY resonant & responsive- This one won't be on the market again until I'm six feet down.
Dishwasher safe! Yeah, that's what it looks like- I was thinkin' maybe it spent a few winters in Alaska or something, but I like that theory much better!
Some of the the cracks in the finish are like the Grand Canyon, full of black crud- Has to be seen up close to be appreciated. I'll try to post some more closeup pics in the next few days. The details in the cracking have to be seen to be believed- it looks like modern art or something!

Forget the looks, how does it sound?

Yeah can you do sound clips for that one too?:tw59
A good friend has an early 70s strat that has total finish checking, but the pieces are alot bigger than in that picture. His is black, so you don't see it unless you're looking for it.
What color is it going to be when you are finished with it?
Holy nicotine!
It does have a certain "rustic charm."
It'd be interesting to see an under the pickguard shot.
Enjoy!
PS- when did the Grand Canyon get filled with black crud?
That sucks. :arh

Played it last night with the band, what a dream! It's one of those "effortless" guitars, as soon as you think the notes there they are...
Oh man, that baby has serious natural funkage.
Love to hear a clip of it in action.

alright, that picture just helped me make my mind up about the strat i want...olympic white w/rosewood board. Gorgeous!
Hey Pete-
Wow, don't know how I missed this thread! Congrats on the new '60 Strat! Must look killer next to the '53 Tele and the '59 Burst.;)
So which is your favorite now?:)

They each bring out such a different thing style-wise, sittin' around the house-
But the Strat is my #1 with my band (I almost always play with a Strat out, you know how flexible they are), but I take the 'Burst out when it's an appropriate scene- Tone for days!
If I could find a more rootsy thing to gig with, I'd be using the Tele, too- I'd love to get into a kindof Danny Gatton style thing, if I could find interested players-
This Start is turning out to be the most comfortable Fender I've ever owned, along with my '59 Tele-
Something about those thin necks that Fender was doing that year was magic, at least for my hands!
-Pete
I had a 61/62 artic white Strat stolen from me at a gig in London back in about 1964.
I still have an old black and white pic with Roy Thomas Baker. My old school mate, who went on to produce Queen, holding it, way back when we were both about 17.
Shit !! and just to think, mine would have looked like that now.:wah :wah :wah

looking at that is like getting a free look up Jessica Alba's skirt
Sorry, but it looks terrible to me.
Prime candidate for a nice refin (unless it sounds so good that one would not want to 'eff' with it, of course).
Tone is in the fingers, eh? Let's hear your Vox, Marshall and Fender fingerings then...
I Dig it, nice score!

I prefer not to think of this as an old thread....merely a vintage thread.
Killer tone, from this thread.....
In all seriousness, that is a sweet looking guitar, if he still has it......

Still got it- This is definitely a "cold, dead hands" guitar...
looks like something thats been in the bottom
of a swamp for 20 years, then put in the back
window of an old Chevy in Arizona sun for another 20.............nice
Now I understand what AXL Guitars was going for with some of their finishes.
