What's the "BEST" Fender Custom Shop Pickup????![]()
Best? I don't think there is one. They all have different characteristics. I've heard a few of them (mostly the 60s ones) as well as the Texas Specials, but to me, the ones that sound the best to my liking are the Custom ‘65 Single-Coil Strat® Pickups. But these aren't for sale separately. You HAVE to buy the damn guitar to get them. And for now, they're found on this: http://www.fender.com/products/searc...tno=9270000284

best?
imo, the CS54's get my vote.

Who cares if it's Custom Shop or not? Jeez, it's all 'Custom Shop this' and 'Custom Shop that' today!
My production Japanese Jaguar pickups speak in a way that no other pickup ever has for me, and i've tried them all.

What's better, filet mignon or lobster?

Things to make them louder
orange picks
I really liked the '69s that were in my last relic. Very woody and sweet sounding.
Is there any info on the specs of the CS pickups? Lots of people seem to like the 60's too. I'm wondering what magnets and resistance on the 60's, '65, and '66? Anyone got some info?
The 60s are very good, but the '56 are better IMO. Both are readily available and you get a free guitar thrown in when you buy them.
The 60s hover around the 5.9k mark, and the '56 are a little lower output at an average of 5.4k. I don't know what the magnets are in either, but the sound is so different it can't be down to one being 'just' a little lower output than the other, so I'd guess they are of different construction.

I've found it's kind of meaningless to talk about one pickup being "better" than another (even subjectively speaking) without reference to the characteristics of the particular lump of wood they're going into. The same pups may sound terrible or wonderful depending on how well they mesh (or don't) with a particular guitar.
For example, I've discovered through trial and error that my strat is a very bright sounding lump of alder, and matches up better with "darker" sounding pups. Brighter pups that may sound great in another guitar will be icepicks in mine.
