In the party band I'm in, we do mostly covers, and we're looking to play "Easy" by the Commodores. I like that nasty, ratty fuzz sound that the solo has. Anyone know what fuzz box they might have used?

I am no expert, but i give my opinon freely. If it is a ratty sound you desire, buy a proco rat maybe? Just a thought however, I've never actually used one. Here is my wish list of highly regarded fuzzes.
--------------------------------
Analog Man, Sun Face
Artecsound Fuzz Town
Fuzz Factory
KR, Gypsy Fuzz
BYOC Tone Bender
And here is what I currently have that I think I could get a close enough tone to what you want.
Danelectro French Toast
Johnson FX-100 Distortion EQ
Yamaha Fifty 112 amp
Don't easily dismiss the dano, it's buzzy and slightly more intense/compressed then what's on Easy- but it would be close enough for me anyway. The Johnson is mainly a distortion box, but it is immensely adaptable with all it's knobs. The amp is an old school transistor amp whose on board distortion is basically a fuzz.
Good luck. Sorry if this wasn't helpful, I guess I just felt like posting something because I've been away from TFF for a while.

"there's NOTHING WRONG with a live penguin, but...I expected a hamburger!"
We do that song. My Fulltone Soulbender nails it to 100% at the right setting. It is a copy of a Vox Tone Bender used by many guitar slinging heroes of the day.
"Sorry" - John Belushi as he smashed a guitar in Animal House
"Back in the day" we did that song. I had a '66 Strat, a '67 Super Reverb, and (as Eric mentioned) a Vox Tone Bender. It was a dead-nutz match for the "Spirit In The Sky" tone.
"When injustice becomes law then rebellion becomes duty."
Mmmm... I love fuzz!
A Rat's not fuzz.
I can't hear that song at the moment and don't know what you need. I have a Fulltone '69 Pedal, a BYOC Tone Bender clone, a Fuzz Factory and a silicon fuzz made out of Radio Shack parts. I'm sure one of those could make the right sounds.
I had a Dano French Toast. It's an octave fuzz- supposedly a clone of a Foxx Tone Machine. It was a very fun pedal. I miss it.
We used to play that tune, and I used a talk box to get the grit. I know it's not "vinyl correct," but it sounded wicked cool... if you've got one, try it.
Rat isn't a fuzz? okay, well then I've edited it out. The history of the Rat on Wikipedia led me to believe it was, and personally I think it sounds rather fuzzy. Also I think of the Rat as being a competitor to the Muff (which is a fuzz), sorta a Fender vs. Gibson type deal.
But none of this really matters because apparently the Tone Bender and copies there of, are the answer to the thread's main topic.

Since Hippiebob intially described the sound he was looking for as ratty, I thought the ProCo Rat was an excellent suggestion...![]()

The only drawback to the basic Tonebender (or clone) is it has no tone control and does retain a lot of highs. This is good when playing crazy loud, but not so good at lower volumes, especially with a sigle coil guitar. So, if you don't play a dimed amp, consider looking for a fuzz with a tone control... ;-)
Thanks for the suggestions guys. I think the Soul Bender is out of my price range. No doubt the Fulltone stuff is nice, but is there anything else that's around the $100 price range that will get me 90% of the way there?
There are a lot of options.
If you consider building, there's the BYOC Fuzz Face and Tone Bender clones. The Dano French Toast is very cool and the octave can be turned off.
The Duncan Tweak Fuzz that I owned for a very short while can't compare to my Fullone '69 on BYOC Tone Bender but, for the $40 that I paid for it on sale, it wasn't horrible.
I have a Fuzz Factory and it's effing nuts! A ton of fun, but tough to make actual music with!
I love that solo!
But that's all the input I have.![]()

I might have to check out that Danelectro. It's cheap enough.
Little Big Muff is rather affordable as far as effects go. also, I just found this company. http://www.artecsound.com/effect/index.html
their ebay site
Look for their fuzz town I think they call it.
Other just discovered pedals to look at for the sake of it:Fuzz Moo
and the one below just has a cool name.

Bought mine used for around $40 also, and returned it the very next day. It didn't play nicely with my other pedals and - no matter what I did - the volume drop was noticeable in all but the most extreme settings.
I think that a EH Nano Big Muff can get you most of the way there, and can be had, used, for around $40...

Maybe it was worse than I remembered!
kinda sounds like a Roland synth guitar on the studio version of Easy...
