Agreed. I'd like to know how he got that sound. Was it a Coral Sitar?

It sounds like an electric sitar, and yes, it's as bad ass as bad ass can be. There's so much going on in that solo and yet, it's memorable. As I sit here, I can remember every note of it, though I've never played it. That says a lot about the solo's melodic value.

    How could you disagree??

Sounds almost like a talk box to me, but like he's using it differently than Frampton--instead of talking, he's just moving his mouth to get different sounds. It does sound kind of sitar-like in places.

    Maybe out of phase pickups?

It was just an 'ordinary' electric sitar.

Completely baddass, and it is an "electric sitar" as Becker points out in the original liner notes: probably a Coral.

The reason I loved the Dan so much was their radical approach to everything, and that solo - all stuttering and choppy, with those exotic sounding modal lines - is a perfect example. Some big-time music critic reviewed their first album and pointed out that Stevie Dan sounded so different from everything else because of their widely-cast rhythmic net... he said something to the effect that, "while virtually all other rock bands boogie, Steely Dan is the first rock band to swing."

The double-tracked lead vocal is a headphone trip too.

Probably. The only other real electric sitar out there was the Danelecto, which was the Coral, without the sympathetic strings. I don't hear the sympathetic string on there, but the drones had their own pickup so you can turn them off.

That groove is just killer. The only other tune I can think of offhand that gets a similar thing going is Magic Man.

There are incredible, ear-candy performances all over Steely Dan's work. I'm a big fan of the Dan...

Silent j, that guitar looks very familiar. Do I know you???
