One of the pioneers, for sure, and one of the greatest.
Every once and a while, rock needs somebody to kick it in the ass, and show that attitude is way more important that virtuosity. In 1970-71, Black Sabbath took on that role. Not to say they were hacks, but they took glorious pride in not having made The Yes Album.

Agreed, sheer power and volume. One of my first "Favorite" bands, definitely made me want to pick up a guitar (along with Ace Frehley and the KISS "ALIVE!" Album)

Absoluetely, without a doubt, one of the best the world has ever known:

It don't get no better than this folks!
Sabbath was badass.
Awesome!
We still cover "War Pigs" and "Faries Wear Boots". From the crowd reaction to either of those two songs, it is evident that Black Sabbath is still relevent to audiences young and old.
The "Volume IV" Album cover was my first Band T-Shirt

I think that it's Iron Maiden. But that's just me...
"UP THE IRONS!"
"I'm gonna find myself a girl
that can show me what laughter means
And we'll fill in the missing colors
In each other's paint-by-number dreams..."
True to the roots.
Without a doubt they have almost everything there is to say in the genre.
But still, although it's starting to show some age....
I have a hard time getting much better than this:

I happen to love the way they did the video as well.
Classic, most of the effects were post processed, leaving the band as they really looked.
I think they did make The No Album.
Don't sell Iommi short though. Apparently Ian Anderson thought enough of him to have him in JT for a week or two.

Iron Maiden is definitely the tightest metal band in history. Holy crap. In their best songs, it's like one guy is playing the drums, bass, and guitar. And if their rhythms are not terribly complex, they are pretty fast and do a good bit of stopping and starting in perfect synch. Even if I didn't still have a little place in my heart for metal, I'd have to admire that.
I also love that Maiden does songs about buccaneers and WWI flying aces. And the Rime of the Ancient Mariner! And my favorite SF novel, Dune!
But Sabbath...yeah. You pretty much have to hand them the crown as the progenitors, don't you?

If you're actually asking then Id say Ozzy with either lee or rhoads.
If you just mean best then buckethead when he plays with brain.
Mitch Mitchell talking about Jimi and strats in general.
If the walrus is Paul then who is Carmen Sandiego?
This thread reminds me of something I noticed in the new Madden 10 game, which I hope is a trend...in addition to the usual annoying crap from bands who want to be Green Day or the Offspring, the game's soundtrack includes some nice classic metal, like Priest's "Painkiller" and Maiden's "Aces High." You probably won't be surprised to know these songs go well with pro football.

just looking at that first Sabbath album cover scared the bejeezus out of me.

Kind of surprise to see as many fans of heavy metal here, but not really.
I count myself as a part time fan, certainly not so entrenched as to call it the only genre worth listening to.
I guess it can be boiled to to a few (maybe 5) bands really that set the tone, after that everyone else is a copy, even at triple speed.
Saw Geezer Butler talk about the early Sabbath, he thought of it like making a horror flick, really nothing sinister at all, just there for entertainment. He has expressed some shock at how serious some people take it.
I tend to think along those lines-just a flight of fantasy, nothing more.
Anything beyond that is something I want no part of.
