Good Grief!!! What have I done?????

    *sigh* I did it again.

I have 2 sets of CS69s. Both unused, because I seem to have found something I like better, which is the John Mayer Big Dippers, of which I also have 2 sets. Those, unfortunately, weren't cheap. I found that they work much better in an ash body than in an alder one, so I took out one Big Dipper set from my alder strat, for a set of CS Fat 50s.

I like the Fat 50s, but the lack of quack is driving me a bit wonky.

So, while strolling thru eBay this evening, I saw a set of CS54s going for a relatively good price.

    I clicked BUY IT NOW.

Here's the thing... i've only got 2 strats. WHAT am I going to do??? I don't have enough guitars for my pickups... I do want to keep at least one set of each... But I'm not sure I can be bothered to go strat hunting again just to put them pups in...

Damn... When this new set arrives, my wife is going to...

I would just keep the sets that sound the best, and sell the others.

There is only one solution. Bite the bullet and get more Strats. I know it's a sacrifice, but sometimes you just gotta do what you gotta do!

'54's are nice pickups. I've got a set in my 50th Anniversary Am Series, and I wouldn't dream of swapping them out.

I just yanked the Custom shop 54's out of my strat. Very nice pickups. I don't like when strat pickups get too beefy - texas specials, fat 50's, 69's - they just don't sound "strat-right" to me.

I agree - MORE STRATS!!! I have a set of '69's in a MIM strat and it sounds terrific.

Sell em. Pickup a set of California Surfers Duncan SSL-1's and/or 2's. More true to the vintage tone than the Fender '54's for not alot of jack. Guys with real early vintage Strats can barely tell the difference. If you want to go whole hog and spend the extra loot, then pick up a set of Antiquities Duncan Vinatge style pickups. It goes the other 5-7% where the SSL-1/2's leave off.
Custom wound sets are titz also. Zhang can wind a set of vintage style start pickups that are sure to put a smile on your face.

I've gone that route before. Custom winds, SDs, DiMarzios, etc etc... I always come back to Fender.

What's the deal with the Big Dippers again? I sort of remeber that JM had some defective single coils and they are the basis of these Big Dippers...

    Yes

I have 5 Strats and 10 pickquards loaded with differant pups. I'm a fickle bitch when it comes to pups and I often change them out.

    78 Strat Pups
    87 Strat Pups
    62 AV RI pups ( Older type 1994 6.1k )
    57/62 Pups ( Newre style 5.65k )
3 sets of assorted Dimmarzio Area 61's, 59's , Vintage Solo's and Hot Rails. etc etc.
    HS3 ,HS2 and YJM
    CS Texas Specials

I love them all and they all sound differant. I also have a ton of other pups. I'm a pack rat when it comes to music crap.

Re: Good Grief!!! What have I done?????

    That's a nice selection, TB.

I got a few of the same......

    CS Fat '50s
    CS 57/62s (two sets)
    CS '69s
    SCNs (two sets)
    DiMarzio Virtual Vintage (two sets)

I got one more Strat to finish up (I'm on an amp jihad right now) and depending upon how it turns out, I may spring for the Fralin VHs in this one.

    Thanks

Wouldn't mind trying out the CS 69's and Fat 50's but I'm addicted to the Virtual Vintage pups for the Hum canceling and I never gig without them so....

More Strats, it's the only option, just sneek them in the house, she'll never notice, I promise.

Re: Good Grief!!! What have I done?????

I didn't like Fat 50s when I tried them in my '57 Strat. I put Fralin Vintage Hots in it, loved them, but eventually unwound them for even lees oomph and more sparkle.
I think they're about 5.3k neck/middle and 5.5k or so bridge at this point.

Re: Good Grief!!! What have I done?????

that's a magic point with strats don. my bread and butter has a 5.8k bridge with a baseplate and a 5.3k neck. i think the middle is 5.5 or 5.6k? dunno, but with the A3 mags in it, well, let's just say it sparkles!

Yep, it hit me after I posted the first post that it might sound like this. My apologies if that was the impression given, but rest assured, I won't do that.

Thanks for the heads up though!

Actually, I think this is what I'll be doing. Both my strats have different pickguard. 8 hole and 11 hole ones. I think I'll get a set of each, and put the pups in for different wiring configurations and for each strat. Thanks!

They're big and clumsy sounding. They don't really chime... They sort of have a "clunk" to them. Some people find this tone sort of dead. It works wonders for me though...
