I haven't played a MIM strat, but I'd put my MIM Baja tele up against Highway One, American Series and Vintage Series instruments, and it'd probably kick most of their butts.

    1) "My Made in Mexico Strat is better than any Fender American I've ever played". This si sometimes taken to the extreme of bettr than any vintage Fender the OP has ever played( and invariably followed by the list of MIA / Vinatge Strats that said commenter has owned or played).

    2) "Just go to Guitar Center and play a bunch of them". OMG, this is the one I think I hate the most. Dude, they are all the farkin Same! Okay? I absolutley despise how a guy says he went to guitar center and played 10 Fender Strats of the same model and the 15th one just rang out and "sang" or whatever. Dude, they are the same- most of them need a set up and they will all sound identical.

3)"Run a Distortion through a Fender amp and it will sound just as good as a Marshall"- Oh reallly?? Thank you, you just put 2000.00 back in my pocket! ( not!)

    4) Custom Shop Strats sound "Just" as good as Vintage Strats. -Okay, they sound good, but lets get real here. The same? No.

5)"Tone is in the Fingers"- Total BS, If your fingers cannot do waht is needed to reproduce a ceratin tone it certainly is NOT the fault of the amp.

    Yikes!
I wasn't going to say much, but here goes...

Some valid points to be discussed.
Vintage is not always better. Saying that, the '69 Hemi Cuda will always "ring that bell", and bring on the cash war. Same with old wood.

I have to also disagree with the "they all sound the same" argument. No way. I won't bring up my "pedigree", I've not owned a lot of them, but I ran a store, and I got a lot of playing time on many vintage/non vintage guitars. Wood has individual character. Just look at the dang trees! They are not all grown the same.

Tone is indeed in the fingers. To a point.

No Fender will sound like a cranked Marshall, no matter what I stuff in front of it. No Marshall will ever get that chime of a good clean Fender. Period. There is a lot to be said for both, but they simply are not the same amp.

I'll stop here. Drunken rants are one thing. Self professed is another. I'll take it for what it is, and respond as such.

    Cheers!

My son's MIM Jimmie Vaughan Strat is a sweet piece o' axe!...and I'd stack it up against my AmSt any day of the week...

Aw, c'mon, cut him some slack...he said right up front he was drunk. I've sometimes said things (in the real, analog world) that should have gotten my ass kicked when I was drunk, but thankfully so far I've been lucky. Glad someone gave me a break...

The more I read this it is a serious offense of CWI - Computing While Intoxicated. Can be fun sometimes but then you get ragged on by others. Just say 3 Jose Cuervos and I am sure Lily will forgive jerryjg and then we can still continue having some fun with this......it is all positive

Yeah, there are so many good American beers now. What I would not give for a case of Samuel Adams Boston ALE! Even with the brewski here in the old country, that taste just appeals to me - the Sierra Nevada also!

Personally, I could go for a Rauchbier. Maybe not now. I could wait until after lunch.

Seems we have a habit of hijacking threads with the beer discussions......but with this on it actually makes sense!

Didn't it all start with beer?

Maybe jerryg did a test with 12 bottles of the same brand to see if they all tasted the same?

Up until now i haven´t have the strength to respond in this matter, but now i´m on my first Friday Tjeck beer, soo..

I have to say that every Fender is an Individual, when i select a Guitar, whatever Brand or Model, i play several specimen before buying! And my experience is that they sound different, all of them!

The tone is of course out of your fingers, as someone said before, don´t play the git and listen carefully, yes there is nothing

Now, i have to open my second beer, it´ll be a Danish one

This is so funny!!!! Think about it: a drunk posts and rather than ignoring him, we engage him. Have we learned NOTHING from playing bars all those years?

Here is a true bar story.

Sitting with my wife between sets, I overheard a young, very pompous graduate student telling his table that he was writing a book. A drunk at the next table turned around and said "Hey, you are writing a book? What a coincidence! I'm colouring one!"

But there's always this MIM Brew:

    My favorite Mexican brew.

Somehow it tastes better in a bombed out building in a back alley in Tijuana. It's something like seven pesos a bottle in a place like that.

I remember a mexican brand from 1980 that I really enjoyed: "Superior" - never came across it in later years.

I didn't get bounced. I asked to be removed casue I was spending half my life there, also, I made a stupid insensitive political remark, and I decided it probably was best to just apologise and walk away so I did, but yeah, I was drunk. This particular post was overflow probably from there, so your right about that. IDK. An aweful lot of folks think I'm dead wrong about some of this stuff, which seemed pretty plausible and stuff that would stand to reason- at the time.

I like Negra Modelo a good bit. Used to always get it when I went to this fantastic Mexican restaurant in the SF Bay area, Celia's. What I wouldn't give for their "Expresso Burrito" right now....

When I was in college in Oklahoma, I liked a Mexican beer called Simpatico that came in opaque black bottles. I haven't seen any of that in years. But I'd take a Sierra Nevada over just about anything. That's a fine product of the beerly arts.

    My .02

I have had a 56 and 66 plus i own several new and custom shop strats. My 56 was nice, but my NOS 56 custom shop is Screamin awesome The problem with old guitars is maintaining them. Gets expensive sometimes.

I only use tube amps so no distortion pedal for me. Someone in the crowd usually comes up and asks "Where is your distortion pedal"? LOL

I think Fender has done a fine job of improving thier quality over the years.

I've hesitated to post on the matter because I'm not drunk, but I have to say that my Made In Mexico Custom Shop Strat sounds just as good as any vintage Strat I've ever played. Better, in fact.
I went to every Guitar Center here in the pacific northwest & played each one through my Blues Junior w/a Marshall Gov'nor to get that Plexi crunch. I picked this particular one because it stood out uniquely from all the others; & that's difficult because in my hands they all sounded pretty good.

Ditto. I worked in a music store for 12 years. You could open a typical box of 6 guitars and all would feel different, especially acoustics – occasionally a real beaut of a player comes through, their usually grabbed by those in the shop ( I grabbed 2 ). That’s why when I heard last year that the guy who owns the local music store had his own tele for sale I sped over to hsi shop cash in hand. Tried the other Tele's but tthey weren't even in the same league regardless of price

I also don’t fall for the ‘old is good, new is bad’ – there’s good and bad in both.

    LOL Cogs.

I have often urged people not to drink and post, but if it keeps you from drinking and driving, or drinking and playing Freebird, I guess we'll accept the posting.

I'm with Kap'n on this one--my Mexican Baja Tele smokes every other Tele I've owned, which is a lot of Teles.

I have played many guitars in one day looking for a gem and they are indeed very different from each other. The stuff that is CNC'd and otherwise done by machine is of course mostly identical, but three different guitars of the exact same make and model will certainly vary. One will have a fret that might not be seated quite right, and one may have a some very minute gaps in the way the wood is joined in a multi-piece body that does very definitely affect resonance and overall "feel."

I've only ever played one actual '55 Strat and one '54 Telecaster. The '54 Tele felt and sounded amazing. The '55 Strat was an absolute piece of crap. Whatever. It's the same argument as the previous one. No matter what year, some guitars were great, some were dogs.

#5... well... I may have covered that elsewhere.

Well - I've gotta add my two penneth... Belgian beer may very well be the redeeming feature of that entire country (no offense intended to any Belgians - but you can keep your lace and chocolate...) and the local ales around here kick the crap out of anything - anyone who's had a hand-pulled pint in the Puzzle Hall Inn would probably agree...

Drunken posts? I'd forgive anyone who at least has the decency to tell us he's had a few too many... as long as he wasn't leaning all over me and slobbering etc...

Guitars? Everyone one of 'em is different. Sure some of it is pretty bland cookie-cutter stuff but occasionally one stands out - that's the one you buy. I never go by what it sounds like in the store - if it feels right and has a decent ring to it you can always change the pups - just box up the originals if yer worried about authenticity issues...

I wouldn't go as far as to say any guitar made in X is gonna be better than one made in Y - but the grain of maple in my two USA made Fenders is probably a little bit 'better selected' than what might be offered for less money elsewhere - does it make them a better guitar by default? Hell no. But they are good examples and are a major contributing factor - ask anyone who's ever played a G&L or MM if neck wood makes a difference... but there's every chance a MIM will do the same - hell I've got an early Yamaha Pacifica neck that I've just bought a Tele body for that's killer and that was MIC... go figure!

If it rocks yer boat - turn it up and wail!

Aaaah yes. Spending time in Belgium pubs is quite nice also. I had one of my old buddies viviting from the US and he wanted good beer so we packed the car, drove a few hours and spent 2 days in Brugge sampling various beers in large quantities. The food in Belgium is also good.....what is Belgian cusine????.......French food in German portions

Now those nice local ales, hand pulled, that you have over there on that big island......all I say is get me over there and I will be writing posts like this one started out with!!!!

My guitars generally sound better when played by someone else LOL .

But apart from that, I have a late 80's MIJ standard Strat (Poly lacquer /maple neck with skunk stripe) with ceramic p/ups. and also a USA artist series Mark Knopfler sig Strat with alnico 5 texas specials (nitro lacquer /rosewood board). The MK sig is without doubt beautifully finished and the alnico magnets are nearer to a vintage tone than the ceramic ones, but I'm not prepared to say it sounds "better" without qualification. there are some tunes that I play that suit the MIJ ceramic p/ups better and so I wouldn't be without either guitar.

When You point your finger 'cause your plan fell through, you've got 3 more fingers pointing back at you.
