    Better tolex glue

What's the standard adhesive for applying tolex to an amp?

And what's a better adhesive to re-stick it where it's lifting off.

These are the two top seams on the Prince G.

I can slide a pick about 3/8" under the edge, most of the length of these seams.

Mojo sells some stuff that's supposed to be the best. Of course, it's probably waaaaay more than you need, volume wise.

Spray adhesive works, but it gets all over everything, especially if you don't have the ability to access the surfaces easily.

I can tell you from experience that Titebond, or any of the other casein-type glues do not work well.

Maybe some other folks have some ideas of stuff you could apply with a q-tip or something.

I have a couple of different sprays.

I can tape things off easily. It's a straight line, after all.

I can spray some into a cup, and get it under the edge with a little paint brush.

I'll await further suggestions, for the stickiest of the sticky.

    Re: Better tolex glue

I use DAP contact cement. You brush it on both the tolex, and the surface, let it sit for 10 - 20 minutes to dry (but not set), and apply the pieces.

Once applied, you can remove it and re-apply before it sets more. The stuff is vapor-licious, so use it in a well ventilated area. You should be able to get it at most hardware stores.

Speaking of the Prince G cab, I have the original cab that was replaced with the one you have. The one I have was peeling in all kinds of areas. I have some pics, but not online. Anyway, it's going to be re-covered soon, but I'm surprised that the new one is also peeling.

Weber blamed the original issues on a bad batch of glue. Seems that it's still bad glue?

The replacement Prince G speaker cab is from Mojo.

I imagine the head cab is a Weber, made at the same time as the original speaker cab, probably with the same glue.

Maybe it's great glue for fibrous stuff, like tweed, not so great for tolex.

That sounds about right. I've never had peeling tweed from Weber but I have had peeling tolex.

the green tube DUCO contact cement can be had at any hardware store or arts and crafts store.
Apply it sparingly with the fat end of a tooth pick .
I have also found that liquid electrical tape( the black version) to be a good touch up for nicked thru tolex.

    Ah hah!

You've had peeling tolex on a Weber box?

BTW- This thing's not going to be lugged around. So I'm not too worried about it totally peeling off. I just think it'd be good to catch it before it gets deeper than the overlap.
That may be the extent of the problem. The tolex-to-tolex adhesion.

Just a little on a blackface cab. I stapled it down.

I used Wilsonart WA H2O for the same type of repair on my amp. I have seen it compared to the much more expensive Mojo glue and it appears to be the same stuff. It rubs off any areas coated by accident after it dries, it cleans up with water and has no fumes. It worked well for me but it's only been a couple of months and my amp is not allowed to leave the house - ever.

I found it at Home Depot for about $10 where Mojo wants ~$40 for the same quantity.

    Huh?

It's a head cab? I thought the amp the Chris built was a 5F2A combo?

I was pretty sure it was a head/cab setup. Obviously there are at least three people who know for sure.

I think Jim had the 5F2A combo originally and added an extension cab.

He may have gotten a head cab to replace the combo cab (the one I have now), but I could have sworn that when it was for sale here it was the combo.

    I could be wrong. Neo?

    It's a combo.

Jim still has the extension cab. I believe it was a 1-12".

I'd need a helluva cable to plug into that.
