Kinman's HD Tone Control - anyone use?

Anyone use the HD Tone Control setting on Kinman's no-solder wiring harness slider switch?

If so, what do you think?

    To clarify,

If you use either of Kinman's no-solder wiring harnesses there is a small slide switch in the harness that you can set either for traditional extreme treble reduction or his HD tone control. Does anyone use his no-solder wiring harness?

    Hmmm.

All the reviews when I search, yet no one has used that slider switch setting in the no-solder harness.

Try it. You might like it. The HD tone control is supposed to be usable even at zero because the treble reduction is not extreme - just cuts the high highs while leaving important upper mids.

I'll let you know how mine works when I get it.

Been keeping an eye on your posting 'cause I've been interested in other players experience with it. I have the Woodstock +, K7. At first I thought, Wow... a tone control that doesn't do much. With only 4 weeks of experience with this set up I like it. I have to change amp setting when I switch to my other guitar, which is an original '62 strat with Suhr FL standards (original pups gave up the ghost over the last 5 years). The Suhr's are beautiful, sweet, and ever so slightly hotter, don't miss the originals at all. Does the HDTC remind you a bit like keeping a wah in a stationary position? Seems that way to me but not as extreme and the outcome is much more musical. So far I'm finding the TC useful from zero-10.

    Hey Madmoon.

    Thanks for your reply!

I haven't received my Traditional MKII pickups and K7 harness yet. It was just shipped via DHL yesterday so I'm hoping to have it in a week or so.

Can you describe the HD tone control? From 0 through 10, what does it actually do? Could it at least cut out icepick highs? Is it like a presence control?

I asked Kinman but really didn't get a concrete answer, and I'd rather not select the HD tone setting on that slider switch unless I know what it will do. Otherwise I'll have to remove the pickguard again just to slide that switch to the normal tone control setting.

So, what does the HD setting do with your Woodstocks?

    Thanks!

    Hi again Bill,

Concerning the bridge pickup; seems to my ears that the HDTC adds some massive midrangey tones at the Zero end. Especially effective for cutting out the icepick highs. As you move it up, it starts to add the highs, which gets me back to a more standard Strat bridge pup sound, still not ice picky at all. Mind you, the Woodstock+ bridge pickup (Hx-85) is a hot/thick sounding pickup, with a lot of growl. It's comparable, as far as warmth/thickness to the Duncan JB I have in another strat, yet the Hx-85 retains a nice straty bite, which is the sound I was targeting.

What may be helpful and adds to the equation is that I use a Mesa Stiletto stage 2/Recty 2x12 cab. Overdrives: Hot Cake, SD-1/808 Analogman mod, or a Fulldrive 2. I think the MKII will sound more like a nice standard strat pup than the Woodstocks, which are darker and since my strat was very bright it balanced out nicely.

You probably received your pups by now. I think I got mine in 4 days after they were shipped. Keep me informed on your findings. I'd like to know your opinions. Kinmans seem to be a different breed of pickup than I'm use to, I'm really pleased with them and use this guitar the most now.

Is it just me or is it hard to find words to describe a sound? Hope I didn't confuse you. I did my best.

    Hey Madmoon.

I got them yesterday and should have them in soon. I saw the little square switch for the HD/standard tone control. Kinman says they are shipped with the switch in the HD position so I guess many people are using it.

I'll certainly let you know what I think after I've had a bit of time with the pups and tried different heights.

I'm eager to hear them. I'm also going to be shielding my strat with copper foil.

    Hi Newstrater

I have Kinman Woodstock Plus's with the K9 wiring in my L series and I left the switch in the HD position, I find it rolls off the highs without touching mids and lows.

I didn't do any extra sheilding to my guitar they are really quite.

I find the K9 wiring is very versitile, the bridge and middle in series gives a real fat humbucker sound.

    Cheers

    Hi Bill

Looking forward to your review on the pups. I'd like to know more about the set you bought.

The more I get out and jam with the Woodstock plus's the more I like them. They sound nice in a blues situation, but they have a fat aggressive tone that works exceptionally well for Rock, Prog rock and Instrumental rock, still retaining that lovely strat sound. I find them very articulate & sensitive. If I play a sloppy phrase it willbe revealed. Well...I'll just have to get better and that's enjoyable also.
