I can't speak for getting gigs, but I can tell you that e-mail and links to my website (a sort of electronic brochure) has become much more effective at generating interest in Gravity Music than sending out CDs or cassettes (yes, I've been doing it that long) ever was.
I suspect there is something about the immediacy and the sense of control over the experience that gets folks to click on a link when they never would have taken the time to load up a tape or disc.
Depends on the level of the venues.
In the dives around here, you'd never get anybody to visit your website. We just hand out CDs, or go by word of mouth.
