    Why is it...

...that anytime I get the idea to sell a guitar that I've had for a while but haven't really bonded with, I plug it in and find sounds in it that I normally couldn't find?

I don't want to mention the guitar so this won't come across as spam, but I plugged in a guitar last night that I wasn't bonding with, added fuzz and analog delay into a cranked amp, which I never do with this guitar, and got some fun tones!

I had plans for that money!

Next week I'll be scratching my head (dandruff?) wondering what I saw (heard) in the guitar last night!

    I think I know why....

When you've decided to get rid of something, your approach to it changes. it's not really "yours" after making the decision, so now you have no expectations of the instrument... it owes you nothing, and you shed your "it oughta do this" mentality. That is, you enter into a state of mind Zen teach Suzuki-roshi called "shoshin," or beginner's mind. And that's where creativity begins, so now you suddenly do something creative and new with the instrument.

Although I don'y know why, I can assure you it happens to me all the time! My wife will tell you that whenever I say I should sell xxx because I don't play it enough it invariably comes out of the case and 5 minutes later it's: "I can't sell this thing"......even happens with amps!
    It's normal!

I've got a Green DeArmond M70 that I keep thinking I'm gonna sell, then I pull it out to take some pics, end up playing it, then I just can't do it.

Its now my lunch hour guitar. I keep it next to my desk at work. Its also the one I take on vacations (with my px4).

    Re: Why is it...

    You guys are all right.

It would be a bad idea to sell the guitar that I'm talking about anyway.

I miss almost every guitar that I ever sold.
I had a 1966 Fender Mustang that I never liked the sound of, it looked great and played nice though. I bought it for $175 and sold it for $225 (I thought I was making a killing at the time) and miss it to this day. I occasionally have to remind myself that I didn't actually like the guitar!

....uh yeah, this is why I have never sold a guitar. I just can't bring myself to do so.

    Re: Why is it...

i TRY to make it a rule that once i decide to sell it, I WILL NEVER PLAY IT AGAIN

very hard to do...but if i didnt do it this way, i'd literally have hundreds and hundreds of guitars.

    Re: Why is it...

The problem that I have with this particular guitar is that it is a very good guitar. The money that I would get for it will not reflect that.

There you go. Which is the greater value: the guitar in hand or the money?

    Sounds like the former.

I love when you get congrats for buying such and such type of guitar, folks GASsing over the mere sight of it.
Then the time comes when you may want or need to sell it and they want to http://www.acmeguitarworks.com/image..._3bolt_200.jpg you.

Like they're doing you a favor.

Unless the guitar is not being used.

What I've done in this situation in the past is put the guitar in it's case, under the bed, for a few months and see if it's missed.

Of course, another option is to break out the router...

I could have an entirely different style of pickups and hardware in this axe for the cost of mounting screws.

Butnut's Tele-Gib haunts my dreams. I could have one in an evening of tinkering and a few small parts, but I could never go back!

trust me, i've made plenty of mistakes in my life. but i'd rather make a mistake than wish i had done something. i've passed up many opportunities in my life, and i regret that. but at the end of the day, i'm glad i've learned the lessons i have learned.

    Ain't it, though?

I wouldn't do the relic thing or the Gibson style switch, but I've got a set of Gibson BB1s out of my Gary Moore Signature Les Paul that are burning a hole in my parts drawer.

I didn't like how they sounded in a mahogany/maple Les Paul, but I think they'd be the cat's nads in an ash body!

    Re: Why is it...

I've sold a couple of guitars that I really didn't have any use for...basically, they were of "lower" quality.
There was one acoustic "folk" guitar that I shouldn't have gotten rid of...on the other hand, I needed a bass amp (which I also got rid of, once I knew a little bit more about playing bass)...so the guitar got traded for a bass amp.
Now, I'm at a point to where I can "downsize" my "collection", but my wife won't let me...seriously!
