    $500

If you had $500 dollars and you had to buy a guitar new or used that has humbuckers and that is not a strat, what would you choose?

I'm open to anything. I play mostly rock, blues, christian music.

If you could provide an explanation on why you would choose your specific guitar that would be great. Yeah. I'm gonna need you to come in on Saturday. :spin

Solidbody: PRS Santana "SE"- Because they're really well made, light and comfy, play/sound/feel great, and you can get stop-tail OR vibrato. Excellent, adult neck shape.

Semihollow- Probably and Epi Dot or a Hamer Echotone- usually pretty darn good out of the box. The Hamers had a buzz going for a while, but they're sort of sleepers now. Probably very good used deals on either of these.

Hollow jazzbox- Used Samick LaSalle JZ

It's not humbuckers, but I'm really impressed with my Godin LG P-90.

They make a humbucker version, and I'm sure it's worth checking out.

At $500, you're probably going to want to swap the pickups at some point.

If you stuck on $500 I would second the PRS SE vote. Their Soapbar II is also nice in that range. Like another poster said, soapbars might be every bit as good for your use as buckers. I went through the same process six months ago and ended up w/ a classic/vintage series 72 Thinline Tele (2 buckers) for $625 new. It's light and sounds pretty good as well. I bought it because it played/sounded better than anything else around here, but I ddin't have access to a PRS SE. Every PRS in our shop was megabucks...

These are usually about $70-$80 more - I am not sure why they are discounted. They do that sometimes - and list them publicly on the webpage.......

This is a REAL nice piece. I have an older standard 3000, this is with HB's (I have P-90s) and has a 3/4 inch maple top. NIce finish......get a case, a few effects and dinner with the balance of your $500....

If you don't like it, send it back and I think you are only responsible for shipping one way.

At the risk of being flamed - (I really don't care - I am immune to it now) it will be hard to find a much better bang to buck ratio out there.....you can, but it is hard!

    Re: $500

Ibanez has many offerings within your price limit. I've personally had my eye on this model: http://www.music123.com/Ibanez-ARC30...c?affil=chrisb

I think they make a really fine instrument at an affordable price. I've owned serveral Ibanez guitars and never had a problem with them.

That ARC300 model appeals to me because it's got a mellow, classy look to it and the control layout looks just right for me. I could get to the volume knob or pickup selector without missing a beat.

I probably won't be buying a genuine Gibson Les Paul anytime soon so I think I'd be pretty happy with something like that.

Anyway, that's my opinion. Really, the answer to your situation is to just go into your local shop (during the day when the kids aren't in there making noise) and seriously compare some different guitars. At $500 you should be able to get a very fine instrument that won't need any major adjustment or parts swapping to be truly up to the job.

Good luck. And, of course, post pictures here once you get something.
    s'all goof.

Considering the price, all I can say is "WOW!!!":bug
That is a shit load of guitar for the money!

On the other hand, have you looked at the guitars in Fezz's Eastwood guitars thread?
If you want something a little different they're cool guitars and priced right.

I was thinking about this one. It seems to have a lot of qualities of a Les Paul, ie: mahogony, ebony fretboard. Grover Tuners and good wiring or at least it sounds good. I love the rootbeer model too.

If I am not mistaken, that is the same as the one I listed, except the M has a 3/4 inch maple cap and is a little cheaper. I agree that the root beer is stellar! I also like the black cherry.

I'm kind of hooked, but like a lot of other guitars too. I just couldn't get over the quality, sound and feel.

I have been meaning to do a road trip to the place, but something always comes up.

About $24 for shipping depending on where you are.

I believe they're Made in USA of mainly Canadian components.

P-90 pickups are made in the USA, the humbuckers, I think are made in Canada

Sure the tuners are Chinese, but just about all of them are these days

Used Gibson LP Special or jr. P90s but after all, Seth Lover was just looking to knock down the noise when he developed the HB, not change the sound. P90s are very PHAT souding single coils.

    '01 production jr.

Epi jr with HB only $99???

Used Epi Dot is a good choice too. My boss's son has one I've borrowed and it's amazing what $300 will get you. You'll want to upgrade the electronics eventually but it's a fine, fine guitar.

I've been wanting a hamer special or studio for quite some time but can never find them for under $500. I'm always looking on ebay for them. Unless they are the Korean models.

I guess I could always save my money but I kind of like the idea of having more guitars than just one expensive one.

One of the new Reverend Stage Kings would probably be my first choice new.

I could probably build a double bucker Strat or Tele for around that cash with some careful shopping.

Lots and lots of good used options are mentioned above as well. On that front, I'll throw the Rickenbacker 680 series into the mix.

I don't think you can go wrong with a Carvin (I'm a fan, so sue me), but Reverend and all the others sugested would make a fine choice I'm sure.

Like JAM, I have an Ibanez AS73. It's a good guitar, I'm planning on changing the bridge pick up to suite my tastes but there is nothing wrong with that guitar other then an extremely minor nut adjustment.

If I had $500 to blow on a guitar I would not mind adding a Danelectro 12 string or some funky Eastwood to my collection.

I've got one from the same year except mine has a natural back, sides and neck. I bought it used with a Gibson case from a former LPF member for considerably less than that guitar's price.

You can hear from the first note played, clean or dirty, that it's a Les Paul.

Those PRS SEs are great guitars for the money.
I bought a Soapbar II last fall and, although I like the tone and taller frets on my Les Paul Junior better, the made in Korea PRS SE has better finish and build quality!

Well, Frankie boy, just pop on up to Rochester and play til your heart's content. I'll even let you sleep the night.

Really, how can you go wrong. You've got glowing references from two great guitar players and a drummer. If you don't like the guitar, just send it back. Mike is a great guy and will actually answer the phone and talk to you about the guitar. All you can lose is the time spent in ordering it. You'll not want to send it back. I'm pretty sure about it.

I am pleased with the self restarint that "WE" all showed......

I agree, its like being in a room of people that have 2-3 in on a joke .....once the first one smiles, its all over...........people are blowing drinks out their noses all over the place!
