I tried a new one and wasn't all that impressed (and I really wanted to like it).
I bought a Hwy 1 instead because it sounded better, looked better and had a bigger, more comfy neck.
Well made, quality guitar, lots of happy owners.....although some folks aren't partial to them......(of course some guys don't like big hooties either......go figure)
Read the posts here (search Jimmie Vaughan) and go find one to make your own judgement.
I can't be much more unbiased than that.

Well its one of my favs cause its such a good value. Its the only MIM guitar you can buy new that has all the better Gotoh hardware like they use on the USA Vintage series and Custom Shop models.
Look for a used one they are usually $350-400
Some of the earlier used ones will have a nicer neck too, right?Originally Posted by Marcondo

The ones with the big neck serial # starts with a 5 they are rare.
Thanks for the replys I'm kinda stuck between the JV and the Robert Cray model I know they are completey different but either one would suit me just fine.

Cant go wrong with either.
The RC sounds way better stock than the JV does. The RC also has a big big neck so be sure to play one first.
Here is the Sunburst RC I had for awhile.
thats a nice looking guitar

I played one Jimmy Lee Vaughan and It was awesome, went back to the same store 2 weeks later and they had sold the one I tried, the one they got in to replace it sucked arse.
No 2 guitars are created equal.
You can take 10-15 Jimmie Vaughan Strats and try them out in a store 1-3 are gonna be dogs 7-10 will be ok and 1-3 will be great or at least you will think a couple are better than the others.
That's true with most guitars IMHO. (The ratios may be different)Originally Posted by Marcondo

My white JV is a total gem and a half......but then I like a V-neck and maple.
I had one. It was a great fiddle. I would say that the JV is one of the few real bargains in the Fender line. I was an idiot and sold mine.
I can`t figure out why so many guys say, `had one,,was a great axe` but you don`t have it now. Why?? I have an American `62 RI,,,its great. I`m keeping it forever!! Or at least til my relicing job is finished!! Thats gonna take at least another twenty years!!

Well good for you! Some people need something different, sometimes they need to pay the rent or their car registration. Not everyone is like you!Originally Posted by CocoTone
I had to sell that Cray Strat in the pic 4 months after I got it to pay some high summer util biills. It does happen.
Rent casualties:
Guitars:
Gretsch 6118
Gretsch 6120
Les Paul Custom
4 different Teles
4 Different Strats
Rickenbacker 330
ES335
ES225
Amps:
Deluxe Reverb
Blonde Tremolux
Tweed Tremolux
Brown Princeton
2 Super Reverbs
Tweed Champ
Stuff happens!
Still have one of my first guitars though, a Silvertone/Dano U1. No one wanted it when I tried to sell it 25 years ago.:hee
I had to sell a Les Paul about seven years ago to feed my family. And sometimes, I'm just plain stupid.
So, out of curiosity, Fezz, how would you compare the trems on these two?Originally Posted by fezz parka
They're kinda the same (I had a 5G9 Tremolux) bias wiggle type trem. The 5G9 sounded bigger, and was totally gigable. The Brownie was a great recording amp.
If I had every guitar I ever said "I'm gonna keep this one forever" about, I would have about 125 guitars. :bwa
The ones I regret selling the most were some old Fender Steel guitars.
I had a 51 triple neck with 8 strings on each neck. Changing strings was a nightmare 24 strings! a 57 Stringmaster with 2 8 string necks and a 57 see thru blonde D-6 deluxe like Steve Howe played with Yes.
I heard clips of 5E9-A Tremolux phase inverter/cathode trem from the Victoria website and was freaking floored. Through a 15" speaker, it sounds majorly swamp-o-primitive and alive. Uber-slandy! I wonder how the later bias trem compares. But that 5E9-A -- holy smokes is that thing cool. I wonder if anyone in the $1000-less-than-Victoria price range is making these.
I have a little Electro Amp that has that type of tremolo. I know what you mean. It's ultra primitive sounding, especially in the way it seems to bend notes out of pitch.
Yeah, I've never heard a Brown trem sound that dynamic and touch sensitive.
I've had my JV for about a year now. Each time I pick it up it amazes me. For the $$$$ you can't go wrong.

Sorry about those casualties, Fezz, some if not all of that stuff must be sorely missed!
It just so happens I picked a "Tex-Mex" Jimmy Vaughn Strat off the wall at guitar center today and was gonna start this same thread.
I was pretty impressed, and also shocked when I asked the sales guy the price (no tag) and he told me "$369". Maybe he pulled that out of his ass, but even for a couple hundred more, I liked it better than the $1000 American Deluxe, tonewise. The neck was a little fat for my taste, though.
Yeah, the two Tremoluxes and the 6120 I miss the most. But I've got other stuff:Originally Posted by boobtube21

You talkin' to me? If so, I'm pretty sure it was new, funny it had no tags hanging off the headstock, but it did have the sticker on the pickguard. Like I said, he might have just made up that price to make me go away, he looked kinda busy. If you're anywhere near Lake Forest, CA you oughta go check it out though. I tell you the way that thing played and sounded if it wasn't the holidays I would have a new strat right now.Originally Posted by Fatbacktim

I always thought they were nice but every one I tried seemed to be in desparate need of a setup and a decent set of strings.
Hard to judge a guitar that's so far out of adjustment. But such are the challenges of guitar shopping. At least at the lower end of the price spectrum.
i was at a GC last saturday. i played about 6 diff model fender strats. First one tried was a JV, very nice for a strat, thick neck....just the action way too high and on about all their strats?
I played next a handful of LP's, stds, classic, and a 58 historic for the R58 and the action just right....neck very cool not too thick !!

I picked up a new JV Strat a few weeks ago and, while I may have stumbled upon an exceptional one, it has to be the best "bang for the buck" Strat I've ever played. While it's not quite the best Strat I've ever played, it's definitly the best maple fretboard Strat I've played to date. I've been very curious about the guitar and I couldn't find any locally so I took a chance with Musicians Friend, and was overall quite surprised :bug when it arrived. I put a set of 10's on it, did a setup, and it's been my #1 go to gigger ever since....and I even prefer rosewood fretboards!
