adler or ash--how do I tell the difference

I have an old bitsa Tele that I am getting ready to refurb. I think the body is from the 70's and at some point before I got it the finish had been removed and a real runny coat of clear full of lint was put on it so the wood is very visible. How do I tell which kind of wood it is made of?

Ash is the same wood they use for baseball bats. Bold grain lines. Alder (as well as basswood) have much more subdued grain.

    Alder

    Ash

    um, let's try that again...

    Ash

Have someone bash you in the head with the guitar. If the birdies you see subsequent to the bashing are singing very brightly, it's ash. If the birdies' song is warmer, it's alder.

This only works once a month.

    Har! Precisely!

I was going to say something snarky like "Can't you tell by listening?", but this was much funnier.

OK Telecast, I am sure my wife would volunteer to be the basher in a heartbeat. Now as the bashee do I have to get bashed with one of each to be able to tell the difference?
    It's Ash---my head hurts---those birds just won't shut up!!

If it will help you tell the difference, then yes. It would be advisable to be double bashed.

Set them both on fire. Whichever one is reduced to embers more quickly is either the ash or the alder.

(Sorry, the best "right" answer was already given by Kap'n, and the best "other" answer was already given by Telecast. Just had to say something).

No, after the fire they'd both be ASH!

Ok, we've beat that to death. Now, let's discuss the "real runny coat of clear full of lint"

What kind of lint? I've heard cotton lint will add depth, but rayon will suck tone. Of course, if it was put on in the 80's it could be lycra.

Has anyone else noticed that there are 24 posts in this thread and only one real answer?

And the original poster has disappeared? He probably thinks we're a bunch of adler-brained ashwipes.

Re: adler or ash--how do I tell the difference

    Good!

Your question was actually a really good one in that you were trying to ID it by the look of the wood. We get a few threads now and again that want to debate the tone of (different) guitars with the different woods, and that's such a fruitless exercise that some sarcasm must flow by rights.

But, as I said, since your question was answered so well right away, we had to have a little fun. Glad you're such a good sport and glad you're here with us! :yay
