There is an ascending bass line that goes A, B, C, D, F, E, A.



Then the tune goes into an Am I IV V progression two times. Am Dm E7#9


It goes through the I IV V progression twice and then back to the C6 progression twice.


Solos are played over the I IV V.


The beauty of this tune is that it breaks up the 1 4 5 drone that jams often fall into and the arrangement is such that it prevents Johnnie Wanker from getting carried away. You have two verses (so to speak) before the song re-groups for the "run-down" from C6.


One other favorable aspect is that the pentatonic minor scale fits this to a "T". It makes everyone feel like stars when they solo because the just can't hit a wrong note over a minor I IV V.

Try using Bm7flat 5 for Dm, bit more of a jazz sound.

I also like to substitute some of these chord forms for the ones listed above while comping a rythm behind the soloist. When the soloist starts to hear these textural changes it gives them other places to go in their solo and if everyone is on board the jam starts to take on a different vibe which keeps it interesting to the players as well the listeners. And the cool thing is, it all gets gathered up with the descending chord line so the next guy gets to start fresh, and newer players don't get lost.

Here's a few chord substitutions that pertain to the I IV V part of this tune. You can play any of these chords against their root chord. All I'm doing is changing the bass note. You can even play these chords as a sort of "pent minor chord scale." The bass notes form an A minor arpeggio.

Why not the diminished over the V7? It's just a 7 chord in disguise. G# diminished= E7flat 9. G# (3rd), B (5th), D (7), F (flat 9) (no root)

Just play the chords mgade. The timing almost sorts itself out.

The run down is 2 beats per chord and the change happens on the upbeat. Then you hang for 4 beats on the final A minor. Repeat once. Then into the Am I IV V.

A word of warning. The walk down I posted in this thread is the same as the recording. The solo sections though are different. I changed it to a minor I IV V for the sake of whipping it out at jams. Enough people are challanged by the walk down when they're hit with it spontaneously. Asking them to learn the other parts on the spot would make their heads implode. So I simplified things a little.
