    Playing Solo Feels GREAT!!!

Stumbled into a BBQ place in Ft. Bragg on Thursday. Struck up a conversation. Ended up playing the owners blonde Lark In The Morning for a few hours. Passed the hat. ($184 !) Got offered a once a week gig. Great acoustics. Didn't need no mic. My ego is soothed. My soul is purged. My face is smiling. (okay the wrist hurts like hell, but it hurts anyhow) I loved it.

Guess I've come full circle. Started out just me and a geetar; journeyed through jamband, hard rock, soul/funk/r&b; old-time/bluegrass; c&w; asskicking rockabilly; lounge lizard stand-up bass standards; fusion; and blues.

    Sure felt great!

Annie what are you doing in North Carolina? Hey you are not so far from us Virginia folks! Are you visiting or are you moving on in at the East Coast? Pardon if I missed the whole story on this...and congratulations on your performing!

Annie what are you doing in North Carolina?
See what Moonie's gone and done?!

Actually, it was Ft. Bragg, California. A sleepy little tourist town; once home to Fishermen and Loggers. Like cattle ranching, wildcats, Mom & Pop Stores and small mining, those are long gone.

The harbor once held 70 fishing boats and is now home for maybe 20 Party Boats, Whale Watchers and state-of-the-art abalone divers.

I've been there and had great seafood. I want to say I went deep sea fishing from there. Isn't there a state park close by? I may have camped there and gotten raided by the world's largest raccoon that loves nacho cheese Doritos.

Great news, though. So. Wear the splint on the wrist every day like a good girl, take your anti-inflamatories, and go back. Live life to the fullest cause there ain't no do-overs.

Splints: on both sides, again. (damn, damn, damn) Mendocino State Park, shoe. Lovely country. Botanical Gardens. etc.

I saw "It's a Beautiful Day" at The Caspar Inn and many others. They'd come there to "debut" their show before heading out on the road. (shhh, it's a secret, 'kay? )

They still smoke a lotta pot thereabouts. I declined. (no Twinkies in sight) Told the kid I was "a narc" and he just wrapped me up and pressed his dimpled cheek to mine, said "riiiiight" and told me I was beautiful. Real hippies still live & procreate, it seems. We did some tunes and I was so relaxed (from the fumes? ) I did okay. I'm invited back for the Summer Solstice. Guess they have a wing-ding.

The flowers, trees, ocean, full moon, were incredible. The people and music divine.

I kept wanting to sing Nancy Griffith's "This is the only place on earth bluebonnets grow..." 'cause it has the same secret garden theme, but: shoot, i cudna remember the words.

Mendocino State Park. That's the one. Divorced, skinny, and wilder'n a March hare. We'll leave the rest alone.

Pretty coastline. I have quite a few pics. Caught an 18 pound 4 oz. King salmon off the coast. That was a worthy fight.

Take care of the wrists when you can, take care of you, and go back and enjoy. There's got to be a way to do both. Somehow.

    Re: Playing Solo Feels GREAT!!!

Oh shit, oh dear! Hell, damn, and spit! They called and offered me $300 & comp'd me a room for this Saturday. I had to decline 'cause the limbs are still messed up from last week.

    just shoot me (bang, bang)

Guess I need to seriously look for a sober picker who can stand to listen to me & learn my tunes. Yargh! (course the price would have to go up & I'd be no better off, Aye S'pose)

Still, it made me feel good. That's a good gift on a rainy Wednesday.

Thats too bad, but you have to take care of yourself.

I wish I had the guts to play solo. I'd play the "no band blues" and I'd be out of tunes....

There is something speical about the link between you and the audience, compared to being in a band where everybody is "competing" for attention. It is more intimate. Congrats - you rawk!!!!

    I did it!

Loved it. Experienced a blast-furnace of appreciation. Made some validating dough (far more than promised). It was very inspiring and beneficial to my soul and spirit.

Laying-low ain't all it's cracked up to be. Maybe it's sedate, dignified and proper, but sometimes I need "let 'er rip". (no what aye mean?)

Gathered-up a friend for a driver so i didn't have to kill the hands and arms pre-gig. I did pretty good. Was joyfully received. My body may be killing me, but i'm good with myself. Happy.

No More Now (for a long time 'cause i got my "fix")

it's not the money...it's shining my light for others to adore. ego food. purging. expunging. communion.

    Re: Playing Solo Feels GREAT!!!

I wish I had that in me. The times I sang in public and I was on, it was such a joy. Kudos for you, Annie D.

On an semi-related note: Hey Annie. If you're inflamed and sore, go to the health food store and homeopathic Arnica a shot. After my knee surgery, the docs had me on gads of liver destroying anti-inflammatories which all did nothing at all. One week on Arnica and my knee went from the size of a bloated coconut down to somewhere near normal. I cound feel it drain from the inside.

Of course, when I told my doctor, qualified and learrned as she was, she discounted it and said it was the scripts. Well, I know better. It has worked well on my recently dislocated thumb and also on my knee when I resprained it.

    Just a tip.

    awwwwwww, u gize.

sabby: Gonna give that Arnica a try. Thanks for the heads up.

I stopped the med's after a year. Just doing nutrition, yoga and rest. I really set myself back when I play. Or do any of the every day things one must do (unless they have help). Change the sheets. Open the jar/door/box. Shave your legs (no, not YOU ).
Scrub and wash. Tote, zip & button. Sweep. etc.

Wow, I just caught up with this thread. Nice goin' Annie. The spirit soars when music is in the air and all else is put on hold for a few fine hours. I love to hear about this stuff. Treat those hands real good and make them well. They's a lot of songs in them there hands. Rest now, share later.

Yes, Annie...I can agree...but it kinda depends on who you're playing for and what the circumcstances are. Bands CAN be a real pain in the ass...but so can doing something solo.
    It's a relative thing.

I'm glad this went so well for you...and I can attest that many solo gigs I've had have been very rewarding...unlike the nightmare I describe in the "Consider yourself lucky, T-B" thread that I wrote today.
    Nice goin', honey-pie.

    Major smiles from Mempho.

My only advice is to medicate before you play, not after. Maybe if you weren't a narc... Oh, and WalMart has these peel-and-stick "pain patches" that work well if they work at all. They are much better than cremes because they keep dosing you and warming you all day.

What guitar are you playing now?

I played my Larrivvee. (sure miss my brother's Breedlove) I taped my wrists before. Had to do the ice and ibuprofen for several days afterwards. Will be getting cortisone injections come July. Haven't played since. Need more time.

Welp if my son fills me with a couple of beers, this weekend, I don't see how I can "resist". I will be very "Pick Doinkal". Then it'll be back to square one. It's worth it.

I was wondering how much difference if any changing guitars might make. In fact, it might help to switch guitars a few times during the night because it would alter your body angles a little and spread the stress out.

Electric is much easier on the body, my Tele in particular, but it just isn't a full enough sound to back up singin' at Joint Volume. (unless I crank it up and do the Jack White and everyone goes outside)
This building just isn't big enough for Me N My Tele.
