Using the position of the first fret and first string as a guide, the bridge pup being the 1st does make sense... but LOL I have always thought the neck pup was position 1 :rofl

Before there were 5 position switches, I used to put that sucker right in between 1&2, or 2&3, and let it sit there and hope I didn't knock it back to 1,2 or 3 by accident. A real trick this was. We called that "out of phase sounding..." at the time, but now they say "quack"! Strats had 3 usable pickups, and all sounded good at something, so I'd say I've never thought of any one position as being useless.
Just to cast another vote, I've always equated pos. 1= bridge pup.
I find that if the Bridge position is referred to as the #1 position, it has a fuller sound - a bit more wood in the tone. If the bridge position is #5, it sounds too thin.
