Ever get back the one that got away?

About 2 years ago I sold a '56 Relic Strat (black of course) to a local music store after convincing myself that Strats were just not for me. I had visited the store dozens of times since selling the guitar, saw it hanging there and never gave it a second thought. Recently, I see a picture of Clapton playing Blackie and I get this feeling... I go to the store under the pretense of buying strings and the guitar is still there: dusty, crappy strings, etc. I picked it up, played it for 5 minutes and of course, bought it back. Since bringing it home I have not pulled out another guitar and this was 6 weeks ago. I keep asking myself why in the hell I sold this guitar in the first place? It plays like a dream, looks great, woody tone, the whole deal. And unfortunately this is not the first time I've done this. Am I alone in my madness?

I sold my brother back to the devil once, I haven't heard from him since.

Oh, nevermind, wishful thinking. I've only been playing guitar for about 6 months now, I haven't had time to sell anything yet
    I got nothin'.

I've seen instruments I've owned in stores hundreds of miles from where I got rid of 'em. Never wanted them back, though.

No, but I did see an old Strat I once owned for sale on a Japanese website. That was weird.

The very first guitar I ever built from scratch was stolen and I found it a year later in a pawn shop ands had to buy it back. The neck from that guitar is the one I just put on my gold Monocaster guitar.

I sold my first real Fender Strat (1977) in the mid 80's. I was able to trade to get it back in the early 90's.
I still have it even though it doesn't get played much. It has sentimental value.

I've sold many other guitars that I sorta miss... Nothing that I need to get back.

My first Danelectro electric was given away to a cousin of mine after I had left it behind to sit in storage at my parents house but my mother finally got it back again so that I could have it back.

Unfortunately my cousin didn't know how to take care of a guitar and it suffered at his hands. It's patched together the best I could do but its more a keepsake at this point anyway.

Re: Ever get back the one that got away?

Many years ago I bought a white Dean Cadillac from a close friend, amazing musician and great guitar teacher. After owning it for a while he convinced me to sell it to get something better.

My friend moved south and we lost touch for several years. A little over two years ago I looked him up again. Unfortunately his health had taken a turn for the worse, largely as a result of the after effects of chemo-therapy for cancer in his late teens. Ultimately he passed, and I often kicked myself for not having held on to the Dean as a rememberance of a good friend and amazing musician.

July 4th, 2003 I attended a party and talk turned to guitars. One of the guests asked if I had ever taken lessons, and I told him of my friend. Well guess what, he bought the Dean at the music store were my friend worked. He said it wasn't in very good condition anymore. I told him if he ever decided to part with it to please get in touch. Well less than a week latter the guitar was sitting in my living room. It was in rough shape, but some TLC and a good tech has made it playable again.

I lost my '79 strat at St. Patricks day gig at a little dive called Club Mesa in '93. I went back the next morning and told the owner and never expected to see it again. I had my eyes peeled at all the clubs around town and checked the pawn shops. About 3 months later he calls me and says he got my guitar back! I about shit my pants and had given up by this point. So I go to his house to get it back and the damn thing was green! The bonehead sprayed it with the pickgaurd on and also painted over my bandname on the case. Well when the light hit the case just right you could still see the name and my bro spotted it. They kicked his band out of the club and took back my guitar. I nearly cried when I played it- my main guitar since I was 18. I cannot believe the nerve of that bastard playing my guitar in the very club he stole it! I stripped all the finish off except for a tiny spot of green on the back near the neckplate.
