Favorite Guitar Solo of All Time

Since we are all guitarists and nothing is more fun to a guitarist than a self-indulgent guitar solo, I was wondering what's your favorite of them all? My top three are:

    1. Pink Floyd - Comfortably Numb
    2. Jimi Hendrix - All Along the Watchtower
    3. Led Zeppelin - Heartbreaker

    So what are yours?

    Mick Ronson

    Agree with all the above.

    but for me.

Mick ronson - Moonage daydream (of ziggy and the spiders from mars.)
the first note he plays is so right

Beck.- 'cos we've ended as lovers.
    Unbeleivably good.

Wow, there's so many, but 2 that I have always been rather fond of is Nugent in Journey To The Center Of The Mind (not that it's a journey he's going to be taking) and the solo in Thin Lizzy's song Warriors, from the Jailbreak album, either Gorham or Robertson (on an LP Deluxe?).
Don't be funken with my Tele ;~)

Jimi is my original hero, the cat that inspired me to play in the first place. Consequently, I love most of his catalog. Electric Ladyland is probably my all time favorite record, if i had to pick just one.

Since it is so hard to pick just one and you folks have laid out so many of the best ones, I'd have to say the solo from:
    The Wind Cries Mary

That's one of the solos that when I cover that tune, I feel like that is the right one to play, note for note, as the phrasing is perfect IMO. Having studied jazz, I love to improvise, quote original solos and take off from there, but Wind Cries Mary is one that just has to be that way for me cause its so balanced and beautiful. I just feel that way about the tune every time I play it (even though I like to interpret the rhythm part somewhat freely, love that Curtis Mayfield inspired stuff!) and that I cannot improve upon it. I guess its my way of paying homage to the master!

how come everyone talks about guitar solos all the time?? i know it's cool and all...but the "verse-chorus(2x)-solo-back to verse" theme is getting quite old for me..esp with rock music...someone please break the old ways!

SRV Little Wing at the 3:36 mark. That run is increadible. The whole song is almost a solo.

    Toneshun,
Solos may not be for everybody, but a lot of guitar players look at a solo as a moment where they get to express themselves within the layout of the song. Working within the song structure to improvise something expressive is what it's all about for me. I see that a lot of the picks here have very unconventional solos. One of my picks, "All Along the Watchtower" for example starts off with a solo that is a take off of the original harmonica part. Cool stuff

It's tough to pinpoint one particular solo as the favorite of all time, but I'm guessing that there's a good chance that either B.B. King or Carlos Santana performed it. Both of them could just send me with one sustained note. Just Sublime.

Randy Rhoads "Mr. Crowley" (both solos)
    David Gilmour "Comfortably Numb"
    Randy Rhoads "Goodbye to Romance"
    Alex Lifeson "Limelight"
    Tony Iomi "War Pigs"

Honestly, I find most guitar solos to be tedious and unnecessary (as in the song would be better w/out it), but there are some gems. I wouldn't include most of the solos mentioned here in my above statement.

Beck - "Cause We've Ended as Lovers"

I hear everything in that song - anger, denial, sadness, bargaining and finally acceptance. An emotional journey.
It is a bit embarrassing to have been concerned with
the human problem all one's life and find at the end
that one has no more to offer by way of
advice than "try to be a little kinder."

Dire straits- Brothers in arms live ,and studio versions, Sultans of swing both live and MANDELA versions (kickass, most amazing soloing ive heard). The "NEWS" song solo kicks ass, but most especially a song that has been making me fall on the ground YOU AND YOUR FRIEND, that tone and lead/solo playing is by far fantastic.

eric clapton - Unplugged solos in LAYLA, including the outro. White room (played live 24nights).

    gary moore- Parisienne walkways

Then its Jimi hendrix on Hey joe, jeff beck too on cause we ended as lovers, and NADIA, gilmour in HIGH HOPES (that slide guitar solo is by far nothing less than genius and intense emotion).

AND to end my list ill have to say PETER FRAMPTON damn

THe solos he does on the LIVE Version of DO U FEEL LIKE I DO, are amazing, the end part finishes me off.
    Take Care
