I don't know much about these guitars but I would assume they are pretty hot commodities but there are lot of them popping up on eBay so it makes me wonder why people want to unload them? Anyone have a clue as to why? Just curious.

I can't understand why anyone would want to sell a thin-necked, thick finished, back-breaking boat anchor either!:hee
It's not the flavor of the month any more...........JJ :lolspin
DAMN. I wish I could remember where I put them!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Awesome sounding guitars, but man they suck to play. That skinny fret wire blows!
If you're bored, you're not groovin'.
Overpriced, neck too thin especially on 82-98 models the 99-present necks are a little bigger. Sticky nitro not cured makes them impossible to play.
50's Classic or CIJ 52 is a much better buy.
Just think about how much money we saved by not gettin' one. :hee JJ

So why should I not buy one?

I owned a 52ri for a few months a 1988 model that was 9+ lbs. Sold it and got a 1998 50's Classic 6.5 lbs that played and sounded alot better to me.
I paid $900 for the 52ri sold it for $750. I bought the 50's Classic new for $500 sold it for $800. I changed the pickup to a 53 lap steel pickup and made it into an Esquire.
Since then I have bought another 1998 50's Classic 6.6lbs that I will keep forever.
I made mine w/ a Fender 52ri body, texas specials, brass barrels and a James Burton neck.

Hi. I am new here, but for what it's worth. I think a lot of shreders buy these guitars and can't handle the thick neck and neck radius of these guitars. They may be a beast to tame, but I think when you find a good one, they are awesome. Mine is a 2003 and it is lightweight. I have a dozen guitars and this one is a keeper.
my 52ri is a 2000 model, the neck is nice and fat,the quitar is very lite.I like the neck pickup, put a voodoo in the bridge. If you play it enough the neck being sticky should take care of it self.Just a thought, maybe you see so many for sale is a telecaster is not for everyone,if you are just learning to play for one reason.
I had one and loved it. SOld it for quick cash because of the strong resale value at the time.
The neck was solid and substantial. the tone was spanky and accurate. It was my best Tele at the time.
The other guitarist in my band still has his. Great sounding guitar. Very solid performer.
Thar the best dern ones ever made to me. :blbros
ole fuzzy, huh?......i'll bet you only have 1 guitar!
BWAHAHAHAHAHA..... :rofl

Granted they do sound terrific and personally, I like a smallish neck but that fretboard radius combined with the teensy weensy fret wire doth sucketh of the highest magnitude.

Fuzzy you ought to post your Tele archive website in your tagline. Too much info not to share!
Sounds like I didn't miss anything by not knowing about these when I bought my '83 sienna burst Tele slightly used. It has a very thin neck on it. Would it be the same profile as the early '52ri? I played it for years without a problem and even now, when I'm playing a FAT necked '50's Les Paul reissue as my primary, the skinny Tele still feels good to me.

I find it interesting that a man who calls himself "Tele-Bob" doesn't even like REAL Telecasters.Originally Posted by Tele-Bob

But what do I know?
He sure has been a little "mod-happy" lately. :bwaOriginally Posted by pbradt
I don't mind the fret wire, it's the neck radius I don't care for. The rest is ok, but I think I'd buy a 50's classic... Maybe a CiJ....

My Nash Bigsby Parts-o-caster ( It's the tele on all of my recordings) has vintage frets and 7.25 radius. The neck is from a MIJ '72 Custom RI. It still seems more comfortable to me than the 9.5 radius teles I've got (Even though I am digging the FAT neck on the Burton).

You guys! You all know very well that Teles are player specific. Different versions suit different players. The PUs in the '52RIs (past and present) are very good. It is a quality Tele and a good insturment to have on board if it meets your playing criteria. (Just reaffirmed that last nite at a tough gig.) Otherwise, there are options. No good reason to bash 'em.
And ebay? I know some folks keep a close eye there, but ebay events aren't really indicitive of anything.
