in any key:
1 5 1 4 1 5 1
all major chords.

Say, in C... It just doesn't sound right with the A on the downbeat of the I chord.
-
Even so, what I came up with is;
3/4 - - Happy I / / V / / I / / I / / I / / IV / / I / V7 I - .
Is that right?

C is not the 4 of A, it's the 4 of G. D is the 4 of A. D is the 5 of G.
Nashville numbering is your friend once you get used to it.
Edit: I see the p[hp isn't taking my extra spaces. I'm in the middle of a serious computer task and I can't take time ot code this now, but I will when I can.

What I mean was in the key of C, the note on the first time you sing "birth-" is an A against a C chord.
-
OK, I think I got it now, I changed my second I chord to a V chord.

71818,
Dayum! That's a cool version, but I think it's a little over the heads of my beginner guitar class.
Pete,
I finally got it figured out, you were right the first time. Thanks.

Ain't I always?
For their next song, have them play Auld Lang Syne. If they get the 2 correct, they get extra credit (or a boot in the ass, I donno).

I actually already have arranged alot of music for an ensemble to play, ( including a 3 part round on Frere Jacque) But they asked to learn this one. The other one they asked for is Stairway to Heaven, but that's not exactly a beginner piece. Some of them even want to learn some Metallica. Oh the humanity!! :hurl

A good and easy song for a student in a similar vein would be the old Temptations (and Delbert, annd Etta James) song (Temptations did it first)
"Shaky Ground."
Easy groove, butt-stupid simple to play (only goes to the 4 and 5 during the solo and NEVER left the 1 on the original Temptations recorrding), and the bass and guitar comp each other. Check it out. You can find it on the old "Live In Austin" Delbert record. Great record, btw.
