Got my Studio Monitoring Headphones today. What a difference.

They sound good. Designed for monitoring. Flat frequency response.

All my other headphones seemed to flavor the sound either towards the bass side or the highs end. When I tried to set the mix, it always sounded different on different system. I now know where to start at least....

They are Audio Technica ATH-M40fs headphones. Not a bad price either. $60.00.

    Hey Mark,

Glad you got something you dig. I use Fostex T20RP's, but only for tracking, never for mixing. Something will always stick out like a sore thumb when you mix with cans on the side of your head...

i use my sony mdr-v700s for live mixing, tracking, and to check stereo imaging. it is so great to find a good set of headphones, especially for studio use. are those closed back photoweborama? cause i've left the open back design, i'm a closed back kinda guy now.

They are close back. They seem to work Ok, but I think I'm also going to need a set of studio monitors eventually also.

I just have a very hard time getting the bass right.

I also have a tendency to fall asleep while mixing. I miss a few things that way....

At least you have the ears to hear them properly.

I want to advise against the usual studio headphone selection, the AKG K-240 variants, which are ungodly cheap, shoddy devices for the money. I got the K-240DFs, which were a the time the top of the AKG studio monitoring cans line with a MSRP of $280. Cheap, cheap, cheap, like $19.95 K-Mart audio.

Like a lot of pro gear, I think these are regarded as semi-disposable, expendable "supplies."

The only thing I've noticed is that they don't have a lot of bass. Maybe that's what flat is. Evertything else is crystal clear. I think Fezz is right. Hard to set the mix with headphones...

The bass is so artificially hyped in most playback devices, I think we are shocked when we hear a true neutral source.

But, yes, I understand it's generally regarded as nearly impossible to do a mix in headphones, though that was what I got mine for originally until I could bag some monitors.

somebody once told me that the reason the bass on early Yes albums is so prominent is because they used headphones to mix them?

regardless, I like Squire's bass sound on those albums a lot :) :)
