a few pics of the '53 reassembled-
Here's some pics of my recently acquired '53 with the pickups back from Fralin and reinstalled- Played with a rhythm section the other night for the first time- Man, what TONE! Sweet, strong, the works!

That looks pretty cool- what kind of frets are those?
You posted a few soundfiles the other day- I didn't post in that thread, but I'll say here that it sounded great!

Those frets look like bass frets pretty big. I love the looks and sound of that one! Its hard to top an old Blackguard Tele.

Frets...
Yeah, you caught me fair and square with my pants down...
Those are jumbo frets on there, my apologies to any purists here.
I have quite small hands, and if I play a guitar with small frets/heavier strings for more than a few minutes, I get hellacious tendonitus- just don't have the leverage in my fingers to hold up.
BUT with big frets and lighter strings I can play all night- and that's what my guitars are for! I'm a player, not a collector, so I sacrifice a small, restorable amount of originality for the joy of being able to BURN on these babys!
(There's the consolation that the frets on it when I got it weren't the originals, so I wasn't the one to first violate it... But then I would have, without regrets!)
Here's a gratuitous pic of the tele with two of my other treasures- (also refretted, as are all my guitars-)
(Besides the '53, that's a refinished '58 burst and my 1/55 strat)

And yeah bluesgtr, this '53 is turning out to be my dream guitar too- Definitely the sweetest, most versatile player I've been fortunate enough to play, and I do know and appreciate that I'm extremely lucky to be able to own & enjoy it.

That's one of the first things to "go" on the vintage pieces I've owned. You'd put new tires on a T-Bird, wouldn't you?

Killer collection. That Tele is a beaut. Enjoy those classic axes (I'm sure you do) and fat frets! Yeah.

Excellent point!!:)
And if you don't mind me asking, how much did you get that for? I am just curious to see if something like that would ever be attainable for me.
Oh yeah and I think we will call that pic the "Holy Trinity" what do you think?:tw59

There was a lot of trading involved in the deal ('63 335 and '66 strat refin), but the seller's asking price was around 10k.
I think around 14-15k is approximately the current market on one of these in good condition (check out gbase), but this one had issues-
The replaced frets, failing pickups, former replaced tuners restored mediocerly w/late 50's klusons, some face of the headstock damage in tuner tampering, and a very poor setup, which fortunately the seller didn't seem to know wasn't a big deal; he thought the thing was just a dog player.
All of these have been adressed, and now it's an amazingly sweet strum!

If that guitar was cooler, you'd get frostbite playing it.
