    RIP Mickey Gilley

I don't know how well known he was outside of Texas, but he did have a string of moderate hits back in the day. He became more well known after the film "Urban Cowboy" was filmed at his nightclub in Pasedena, Texas. The place was HUGE. I've seen everything from women fist fighting on the dance floor to rodeo performances in his rodeo arena/concert hall. (I remember seeing Charlie Daniels when he was quite popular). I have his Greatest Hits CD in my computer library, I may have to give it a listen again.

    RIP.

I had read a few things about him in music magazines.

I think you can find his songs on Spotify.

Spent a lot of nights in his club.

Never worked with anybody who sang his tunes. I did visit his club in the early 80's, the "house" band was great. Middle of the week, and there were a lot of "friendly" women offering to teach me the Texas Two Step!

I went back and listened to his "Ten Years of Hits" CD. I believe all 20 songs were covers of other artist's songs. He had a recording studio at the nightclub.

His national fame was short-lived, really. He might have been a big deal at home, but nowhere else that I know of. That's not to denigrate him but rather to put his career into an unexaggerated slot. He was a talented and charming man, and that's why he even got his 15 minutes. He deserved more, perhaps, but I doubt that he worried. His other ventures were successes.
