    Gibsons, Fenders, and Keith Richards

Quite a long time ago, some on the LPF schooled me on the fact that Keith played Gibsons more than Fenders up until the great thefts during the recording of Exile.

The first Stones albums I bought were, in this order: It's Only Rock n Roll, when it first came out. Then Goat's Head Soup, Flowers, and Sticky Fingers. These are my favorite Stones albums, and as far as I can figure, Keith was using Fenders a lot, Micawber, for example. That's why I see Keith as a quintessential Tele and Strat player. Silly because when I think about it, I also associate him with his 335 and a Les Paul Jr.

Keith sounds wonderful on Gibsons or Fenders. Do you have a fave Stones album, and what do you think about Keith's guitar choices on that album?

Looking forward to hearing PM's estimation.

Ah, but yes I do. I have most of the albums in some format or other. I used to have it all on original vinyl.

I do want to listen to "Get Your Ya-Ya's Out" again. Thanks for reminding me.

Actually Keith doesn’t play a Strat very often. Miss You in later years, has been done mainly on his Mary Kaye and Thru and Thru whenever that was performed live. Ron however…

His famous Micawber, Sonny and Malcolm - Teles have been regular since the early ‘70s along with other Teles such as the black Custom.

He played his strat a lot during the ‘72 US tour but AFAIK that was about it. Not that he doesn’t like it… He plays one from time to time but he definitely prefers Teles.

    Ronnie, on the other hand…

I always thought Keith sounded his definitive best playing a Les Paul through a Vox AC30TB.

He does a great job with a Les Paul Jr and a Bassman too

You're right about that, and if I'm not mistaking he also had a Strat for open G tuning a while... But still, he never was or is, a typical Strat Player, although I'm sure he still has plenty more than the Mary Kaye in his arsenal.

Ronnie seems to love his '55 hardtail Strat as one of his main guitars, although he doesn't use it as much nowadays as he used to.

    +1

Seeing Keith Richards with a Strat is as foreign to me as looking at a pic of Chet Atkins playing a Rickenbacker.

Keith is Keith playing whatever he plays… It’s all about that smile and that cigarette smoke.

Ronnie has a fine and very understated taste for strats!

Re: Gibsons, Fenders, and Keith Richards

Keef's been playing a lot of Juniors lately - meaning like 20 years or more; (several lifetimes / careers in today's music world...)
I saw them on the 40 Licks tour, 2002, I think. I didn't take detailed notes, but while Micawber and his brothers, plus the black Custom made appearances, he played Gibson Juniors and ES3x5 (I think - the burgandy one) though more than half the show.
I've always wondered what Keef's amp and effects chains are - most of the shows where they're visible I think it's tweed styles on top of old school Mesa Boogie cabs, but half the time you can't see them.
