Song Thoughts: Rolling Stones, Can You Hear Me Knocking

This tune is one of my favorite Stones songs. Sticky Fingers has so many great tracks of Mick Taylor and Keith locking in and working those guitars together to perfection It's so perfect at times on this song that you'd think they'd fleshed out every note. Keith knows how to work it against the time signature. Mick Taylor hits a big bum note, and they left it, but hey...

What do you think about the song?

In my opinion, the Stones never sounded better than when Mick Taylor plucked his pick with them.

Taylor always seems to get overlooked when the discussion turns to guitar players. I'm guilty of this, too. I recently was talking about Clapton, mentioning that he was one of many great guitarists to come out of John Mayall's Bluesbreakers. And I mentioned Jeff Beck and Jimmy Page and completely overlooked Mick Taylor.

Yet among my Mayall albums I own Blues From Laurel Canyon and Diary of a Band (Volume Two), both featuring Taylor.

Mick’s style was so different from Keith’s. Those two styles together give so much depth to the composition that the playing gives us lessons in musicianship.

Definitely one of my favorite Stones songs.

The killer riffs and Charlie’s drumming are just perfect.

As for Mick Taylor, count me in. He was a great soloist, raw and fierce. I like Ronnie too, he makes a more balanced duo with Keith. But Taylor kicked ass.

"Tumblin' Dice" from the Exile On Main Street album is another timeless Stones track featuring Mick Taylor.

Exile is my favorite Stones album, as it is for many.

Tumbling Dice is one of the best. I even liked Linda Ronstadt’s version. Great musicians on it too.

I love to cover that one with the band. Too bad I only do riffs and rhythm, I’m the only guitar player and the guitar is tuned to Open G and capo’ed. I’m not comfortable soloing that way. Our bassist does the fills.

To me one of the greatest Stones songs is gimme shelter. It’s infamous, tragic and has a very strong chorus.

One of my top 5 Stones covers, along with Sympathy (soloing over that one is fun!) and brown sugar.

We don’t cover that one but it’s very cool too.

I like the jazzy jam aspect of this song. It’s like Low Spark of High Heeled Boys, in a way but more of a rocker. Definitely on the playlist for the road trip today.

Can You Hear Me is just one of my favorite songs in the world. Mick and Keith's guitars together are unparalleled in the Stones catalog.

And Goat's Head Soup, imho, is right up there with Exile and Sticky Fingers. It's a solid album, and there are few ballads in rock music as good as Angie. Every track on those 3 albums is gold.

You know, my OCD keeps kicking in when I come across this thread. The song I'm familiar with from the Stone's is CAN'T You Hear Me Knocking from their Sticky Fingers album. Unless there's another similarly-titled song that I'm not aware of (could be, I'm not a big Stones fan).

You're right, but between Jagger slurring his words, the typical Stones mix where the vocal is slightly buried, and the vagaries of memory, I can understand someone confusing the title. I had to go look it up myself after reading your post.

Which is worse, misspelling or addressing other topics instead of the op about the song and not about Mayall or Clapton. OS, you Goober. I’m kidding you.
