    Prog Rock Likes?

Among my fave prog bands are the usual Yes, Rush, King Crimson, Floyd, Genesis, early Kansas, ELP, Gentle Giant and some Dream Theatre. Tull is probably most important to me, mostly for sentimental reason. After I listen to these bands, I have a hard time accepting other prog bands because I don't hear anything better than these bands. Mars Volta doesn't quite grab me, but maybe I'm not getting them. Spock's Beard, same.

However, I'm open to listening to bands I've misjudged or overlooked. Who do you like?

I’ll list Pink Floyd as my favorite though purists might argue that they are a psychedelic band rather than prog for lacking classical music elements such as tempo and time signature changes.

I also love Jethro Tull and Rick Wakeman

Yes. I haven't thought of them in years. Thanks for that suggestion. Listening to them now. Excellent.

    Re: Prog Rock Likes?

It's been so long since I thought of any form of rock music as "prog(ressive) rock." During the days of underground FM radio, pretty much everything they played that wasn't acoustic fingerpicking guitar was labeled as progressive rock.

Everything from (Brian) Auger to (Frank) Zappa was fresh, new and "progressive" to these ears. There was so much blending of styles that Steve Miller played blues, psychedelic, and space music all on the same album. Most of the artists I listened to couldn't be thrown into a single barrel. Spirit played rock, but threw in jazz licks. Jefferson Airplane was rock, psychedelic, electric folk, you name it. The Byrds, Quicksilver Messenger Service, Savoy Brown, It's A Beautiful Day, and so many others were progressive because they broke barriers and crossed lines.

The term "progressive rock" doesn't bring a single band's name into focus, but an entire genre of an era now long gone.

"Prog" can cover a lot of bands. My favorites are the kind who can write and perform a sustained and focused work that is as complex and original as any work of great art.. I prefer Tull's A Passion Play and Thick as a Brick albums over Aqualung. I love all kinds of songs, but I also dig a concept of either music, subjects, and both ideally.

    And it needs to rockkkk.
