It must be nice to still have your voice after nearly 50 years of playing and performing! Last night at The Barns At Wolf Trap, Jim Messina gave an outstanding show featuring songs from Poco, Buffalo Springfield and, of course, Loggins & Messina. After ridding himself of a frog in his throat ("I've got to stop eating frogs," he said) he sang every song without a hitch. A technical problem with an old mandolin he was going to play causing him to pass on the tune was the only glitch. His supporting band was excellent, and the entire show was a delight.
Messina only played his Telecaster once, but his shifting array of Strats run through Orange amps gave him that twang I've always identified with him. A couple of extended form songs ("Angry Eyes" and another) were a real treat. Messina's guitar playing is not flashy, but tasteful and emotive. A fun time!
