Has anyone of you been a Boy Scout too?
I was glad to be offered an anniversary neckerchief from my old group.

I started in Cub Scouts then transitioned into Webelos and, ultimately, the Boy Scouts.
I regard Scouting as a worthwhile experience for impressionable youngsters as they become teenagers then matricluate to manhood.

So good to know that, brother. It was a very important part of my own education. Learned more with my own old man about being in the great outdoors, how to use knives, firearms, how to fish and a lot more but my team working skills and organizational sense were greatly developed by having been a Boy Scout.
Be prepared!
Indeed. Today I had to knot some rope for a project and discovered I still know how to tie a clove-hitch.

it was the Boy Scouts that got me to enjoy being in the outdoors. My dad was a city boy through and through. His idea of roughing it would be to not order room service, or have to walk up stairs without an elevator.
We didn't do much in the way of recreational activities. I developed my skills pretty much on my own. He wasn't a neglectful parent, he worked his butt off to support a family of five. What little time he had to himself he spent helping clean the house on weekends and wash his cars.

What were the names of your groups/clubs/troops (no idea how you English speakers call it).
I don't recall names being used back in the '50s and '60s. As a Cub Scout I was a member of Pack 442 and later as a Boy Scout, Troop 442.

I found my old Boy Scout Backpack and mess kit when I was packing the garage at my old house. I think I might have actually kept it. I'll find out in the coming months as we start to sort all the junk I moved from the storage unit.

Our troops were named after animals, mine was Wolf
My brother was a Boy Scout. We went to the events as a family. It was nice, but not my thing. I was somewhat of a loner- playing guitar, building model cars, drawing pictures and reading books.
My son joined Cub Scouts, but that was just for the pinewood derby races!
Both of my sons achieved the rank of Eagle Scout and worked hard to do that. If you don’t know what an Eagle Scout is you’ll never understand the work that goes into that rank.
Btw judging by what I see the younger generations being and doing, I think scouting should be obligatory.

I loved Cub Scouts, and we moved to a small town, and the Boy Scouts chapter was a disappointment. However, Dad, and some heavy machines, built us a house in the deep woods, and I had a pretty good scouting education. I regret that i didn't go through the scouts like you guys did. I missed out on the wider range of things your learn. Dad taught me a lot. I'm no Jeremiah Johnson because I like my AC, but I'd know how to manage in the woods if I had to. And I can still saddle and ride a horse--you'd all have a great laugh if you saw me.

Ken, can we change the name of this thread to something like "Boy Scouts Experiences"?
I know it's meant innocently, but we show up quickly on internet searches, and "scouti** for b**** is bound to be confused. it'd be good if we could revise that. I don't mean to be a censor.

I chose that title because it’s the name of the Bible on the subject, Lord Baden Powell’s book. But no objection, change it…
I mean no insult. I’m perhaps making a bigger deal of it. I do apologize.

As nobly-intentioned such a sentiment might seem, it is counter-intuitive to the human preference for freedom of choice.
Germany's National Socialists tried this in the early 1920's -- the movement was known as the "Grossdeutsche Jugendbewegung".
Be careful what you wish for.

I'm getting the feeling that this thread, as well intended as it was, is in order to be deleted.
Sergio, I know you weren't offended. I felt two ways. I didn't want to make this into a dirty thing, but I'm touchy on the subject. I've found out about a case of molestation recently, and I'm just sick about it. So I just didn't want to be a policeman of the site.

I was surprised at the turn the thread took, and how quickly.
Cub Scout and the Troop 255. In Bangkok, Thailand. We wore the "British/Australian" form of uniform.

Proud to be a TFF Dumbass!
I was going to join the Scouts until I discovered that I could get a campaign hat at the local army surplus store
