    Link Wray!

I was giving my amp some exercise this morning and to listen to its reverb I started strumming Link Wray's "Rumble".

Dude, it's amazing how three chords, a beginner's first lesson pentatonic scale and some crazy strumming can produce such a sledgehammer song. And that was composed in the 50s, for Chrissake!

Awesome. I had listened to a lot of Wray's stuff in Tarantino's movies and of course I know most of his music but this revival really made my day.

I played the hell out Rawhide when I first started playing. Great stuff. As is Dick Dale if you like the Tarantino connection.

    Re: Link Wray!

I saw Link Wray play a few songs live at a "Volunteer Jam" concert in Nashville around 78, I think. I didn't know who he was, to be honest. I thought he was cool, but he seemed so out of fashion. The only musical press I read back them was Creem and Rolling Stone, and neither was rushing to talk about Link Wray, and the only time they ever wrote about Chuck Berry or other 50s stars was when one got arrested or somehow made a public spectacle of themselves. AM radio and my siblings introduced me to the older guys, but I was in my 30s before I started finding out about people like Link Wray and Dick Dale.

We used to have a band called the Wray Guns.

"Rumble" is the ultimate "the badasses have arrived" movie soundtrack selection. I loved the way Tarantino used it.
