Job Search, Including at Guitar Manufacturers

I'm applying for remote jobs at guitar stores and manufactures. Hope I find something, but at this point, I'll take any remote job that I'm qualified for.

If any of you know of any remote opportunities, please let me know. I thought I wanted to retire, but at 58--it's too early, I need to work and need to work now. I am a hard worker and good at what I set out to do. I've done everything from running a record store, to being a bank teller, a journalist, teacher, and and. But I'll take an entry level position gladly.

Sorry about the ad guys. I'm sticking feelers every way. It's not a matter of retirement boredom. I need the money, but I also need to contribute something to someone.

Good luck, Willie. Nothing available at this end, but I'm sure something will come along.

Sweetwater was looking for people but I don't know about the remote work aspect. I know when the Covid shutdown first happened my guy was working from his house. However back in July or August they re-opened the campus and I guess they expected people to come back in and he chose retirement instead (he was only a few more months away anyhow and his wife had high risk co-morbidities). I was sort of interested in asking them but my last real job was over 15 years ago so I'd have a hell of a time trying to convince anybody to hire me.

With you being a "knowledge worker", there are going to loads more opportunities for you compared to someone in "the trades" (no disparagement intended at all). I would start with local, state and federal gov't opportunities. They're the ones more likely to support remote workers at this point in the game. Private sector I can see them wanting folks back in the office as soon as they're green lighted to do so, if not done so already.

Magic words for me would be like" "program analyst", "policy analyst", etc. Generic enough for people with good reading, writing and critical thinking skills...but not so specialized to need domain expertise (e.g., nuclear energy policy). In your neck of the woods, the Navy Personnel Command might be something worth looking at...as would places like Oak Ridge NL.

dirtdog, Thank you. What you wrote is so helpful. You're right about the type of jobs. I've been an academic so long that I don't even know what their job titles mean a lot of times.

We academics get trained to the point that we're valuable to no one outside of academia. It feels that way. Even with a PhD in literature, I couldn't even get an interview at Books a Million. An age thing, I think. I'm 58.

No problem, Willie - I can appreciate how hard it is to "start over" at this age. Starting something entirely new could likely be more daunting than "evolving" yourself. In my circles, there's always need for editors, writer, etc. to help shape what we're working on. My experience is in federal gov't in Canada, but I know from experience that things work VERY similarly in the US federal sphere. If nothing else, my US colleagues rely way more on contracted support than they do employees. Might be worthwhile to get hooked up with an HR agency or other specialist consultancy. The ones I have first hand experience are outfits like Battelle, Booz Allen, etc. Lots of room for an experienced thinker in these spaces. It's just about how you position yourself....;-)

O my gosh. Those are great ideas, and that info makes a lot of sense. Man, this gives me hope. Thank you.

Why don't you take a cue from Sam Kinnison's "world hunger" shtick......?

Move to where the jobs are.
