    Ok, sacrilege, but...

Anyone else like Jimi Hendrix’s studio albums much more than any of his gigs?

I’m not saying that his live playing was bad in any way but to my own personal taste he sped up too much, live. Songs like Fire and Purple Haze just don’t sound so good when played too fast.

I pretty much only listen to his studio stuff, with the exception of the excellent BOG New Years Eve show. To me, as great as he was on stage, his real genius was in the studio. I think part of the reason why the live stuff is so fast paced is he can't replicate all the parts he layered in the studio so the pressure was on and that can cause acceleration whether intentional or not.

I was too young to have seen him live. From more than a few accounts I've read, you either got a mind-blowing show or he would be so high he couldn't play.

At least his guitar was in tune during his studio sessions.

I rarely listen to Hendrix, live or in studio. I think I burned out on him decades ago.

I myself really love Hendrix. I educated myself on guitar music through him.

And yes, a lot of his live stuff is slightly out of tune and sloppy but hey, it was the 60s and he was wayfaring through a lot of trash in order to make a point musically, so... yes, he was awesome in live situations.

It’s just that his albums sound just PERFECT. And his gigs are a bit too rough and fast paced to his own good, the way I hear them, though I enjoy them too.

I’ll say this: there’s only one way I like to listen to the Star Spangled Banner. Too bad he didn’t live long enough to do a version of O Canada! 😂

I like the Band of Gypsies live album, but Woodstock is unlistenable to me, out of key and noisy. Great if you were there. Not if not.

    Sergio,

You're too spoiled form listening to all the Dead live shows. They are the antithesis of Hendrix. Polished, practiced and musical. Jimi was a great performer but as a live musician he was a bit, shall we say, undisciplined.
