    Tool kit for gigging guitarists

yeah, what does that word 'gigging' mean again? LOL

saw this in a banner ad today. I can't speak for the quality of the files etc but for the amount of tools, in a carry bag for this price, seems pretty reasonable.

I might pick up one. If and when I start jamming again, it would be so cool to be able to help somebody who ran into a problem, right there on the spot.

    Files?!?!?

You gonna dress some frets or install a new nut during a 15-minute break?

The only tool I ever took with me on gigs was a USA-made Leatherman, with a fresh set of GHS strings in my guitar case.

    That’s for sure!

For a gig, I’d bring spare batteries, spare cables, spare guitar/bass and a preamp pedal if the
amp takes a dive. Even changing a string during a gig is a pain. The show must go on!

Now, for maintaining gear between gigs, that’s another matter. Esp. If it takes a shop a week or to fix your gear. Lots of stuff can be done at home or on the tour bus if you need the guitar for a show the next night.

It’s like my motorcycle or bicycles- I bring enough tools with me on the ride to be able to limp back to civilization with a reasonable amount of effort, but I won’t bring my entire toolkit with me. If I need to bring enough tools to rebuild the bike while I’m on the road, I’m doing *something* wrong.

I share your sentiments. I used to bring a separate gig bag along with me containing spare tubes, my Simpson 60 VOM, soldering iron, pliers, dikes, screwdrivers, etc. Rarely were they ever needed, usually to repair a band mate's gear. After I got to the point where I could afford more than one amp, I'd just bring a second along to use as a backup. And I always took two or three guitars with me so I could enjoy my Jack Daniels with a Coke chaser during breaks instead of hastily restringing a guitar or troubleshooting an amp problem as an impatient and unruly audience hurled various projectiles at the stage.

If I was gigging, something like this would come in handy, if only because everything is there.
Of course add in spare strings, cables, tubes and fuses, batteries, etc.
