    Epiphone amp

    I'm considering purchasing a '63 Epiphone amp. Don't have enough details yet, so it's not a done deal. Any opinions? Took a quick look over in the Les Paul forum, but didn't find much.

    I think some Epiphone amps from that period would be very desirable, some not.

    Here's an Epiphone Wiki page with info on various amps-

    Let us know if you buy it, what model it is, how it sounds, etc...

    I’ve got a 1964 Gibson Falcon. Not sure if that era Epiphones are the same “budget” kind of line like today’s but my little Gibby is killer!

    If I pull the trigger, I'll post pictures etc.

    As far as the model, it's a 1963 Devon EA-35T with original cover.

    From the pics I’ve seen of this amp, it looks remarkably similar to the same era Gibson Crestline series (of which my Falcon GA-19 RVT is). If it sounds anything like it looks, you’re in for a treat! Looks like the Devon doesn’t have a reverb circuit? That’s the thing I like most about the Falcon - it’s exceptionally lush reverb.

    RV = reverb
    T = tremolo

    ...in the Crestline world anyways.

    vinyl, you got me curious so I started doing searches, and even though there's a wiki or two, information is really sparse.

    How well regarded were Epiphone amps back in the golden age?

    I think that's true in the Epiphone world too.

    No reverb, just tremolo.

    I do happen to have a Fender Reverb unit though.

    In the "golden" age, probably not very well. But this is the 21st century. Due to Covid, I pretty much have to buy without auditioning first. But I expect it will break up fairly early on the volume knob.

    I've always been a Fender player, but the "dark" side is calling.

    We'll see what happens.

    Cheers,

    Yeah, I remember amps during the golden age that would just as well have been made out of cardboard, and some might have been.

    I had a Silvertone 1482 that was made out of some kind of pressed board material with covering that was barely thicker than wallpaper. It didn't stop it from being a good sounding amp. I just souldn't take it on the road or get caught in the rain with it!

    I've always been a Fender player as well. Marshall, Mesa and other amps have been my musical version of "strange on the side".

    The ‘64 Falcon I own is made out of plywood. Maybe 5/8” and maybe birch but who knows. Definitely not cardboard or particle board. Came with Jensen C12N originally. When I bought it, it had a Pyle driver in it. I replaced with a correct vintage Jensen and did a restoration. Not a faithful restoration since I couldn’t source the original tolex or grille cloth. But I gave it the 1960s Dodge Monaco treatment (burgundy and black). Full electronic restoration as well.

    Doesn't have the original speaker. It's fairly clean cosmetically, but at this point I think it's slightly overpriced. Probably will pass on it.
