About Chuck's thread on Jerry Garcia's band.

Having read our friend Offshore Angler's (Chuck's) thread about how he likes Jerry Garcia's independent band, which indeed is very good though I myself prefer the original Dead stuff, I thought I might share my latest listening experiences, and I happen to be hooked on Keith Richards' solo stuff.

I know there are several other Stones fans like me here, but if any of you haven't taken the time to actually check out Keef's own albums, I tell you: it's VERY MUCH worth it. This chap sure knows how to write some intimate and authentic blues, and his ballads aren't half bad either.

Funny thing is, his own albums sound like him, you can spot almost no Stones DNA thrown in. Keith is more about the Blues and Contry stuff when he does his own thing.

I strongly recommend Crosseyed Heart and Talk is Cheap.

Keef's last album was a masterpiece, one of the best things he's done with or without Mick and co.

I have all of his albums on my "great rock" spotify playlist. Algorithm queues his songs fairly often on my playlist.

But man, I just can't listen to any of Mick's solo albums. I love him, but I can't listen to them.

I can't remember a single solo album by a singer from a great band I actually liked. The guitarists on the other hand kick ass.

Yes Expensive Winos and The New Barbarians with Ronny Wood.

And Sergio, have you ever watched The Rolling Stones' Rock and Roll Circus?

Keef on bass with The Dirty Macs is a moment in rock history.

And Tony Iommi playing a clean strat with Jethro Tull was a blast!

I think there was a story about Tony auditioning for Tull and they were all for it. He played that set for the movie and then declined to take them up on the offer.

Re: About Chuck's thread on Jerry Garcia's band.

    I love this song.

I hate watered-down reggae that's safe and white enough to play on the loop in Dillard's.

But Keef genuinely loves reggae. You can tell from this song that he's played it and thought about it and loved it. I don't see his version of it as cultural appropriation as much as homage--same with his approach to blues.

As he's done with The Stones' stabs with reggae, he's written in the genre while mixing it with his version of blues rock and pop.

Keef is no wasted druggie. He's a very intelligent man, great reader, very astute in interviews. Sure he was being interviewed in the 70s, reached up, touched a tooth which disintegrated in front of the camera, but the man is a deserved legend, deserved because of his significant contribution to the art of songwriting and guitar playing. That tooth though. Ha ha ha

Re: About Chuck's thread on Jerry Garcia's band.

I've always thought Keith Richards was more of a genius at rhythm guitar than anything else. The open - G tuning grooves make the Stones distinctive to the point that when anyone else uses them (i.e.,The Black Crowes) they get accused of ripping off the Rolling Stones. "Brown Sugar" or "Start Me Up" show how simple played perfect beats uber-technical.

The funny thing about Keith Richards licks is that they just fall out of your fingers naturally. It's like they're baked into the guitar and he discovered them.

    IMHO.
