    Oh boys......I'm baaaack!

Been a while since I've visited but I hope y'all will forgive my absence. I haven't been idle though -- I've put a few more guitars together and restored several amps. Hope you enjoy them......

hmm? What's that smell? Like nitrocellulose and tolex?

    welcome back

my, my. I'm not sure where to begin. Tell me about that last guitar with the Vibroverb sporting a JBL dust cover behind the grillcloth.

(a rundown on all of them wouldn't put you on the 'banned list' either, I suppose )

Damn Rog, more than any absent member, I've missed you the most. I'm so glad to see you're back. I know we disagree on political things, but we share a lot in common, and I'm glad to see you here again.

I've added some geets to my corral as well. I'll take some pics soon and post them. Recently bought a Ric 330--don't kill me, Rog!

We haven't met, Roger, since I guess you backed away before I arrived. But I'm glad to see anyone with as great a love for [Fender] guitars as you! I'm Fred, and I plan to stick around.

Roger, are all those new acquisitions? What are the years and specs?

    Re: Oh boys......I'm baaaack!

The first photo depicts my newest acquisitions. The guitar began life as a 1999 MIM Classic 50's Strat in Surf Green. I had the body professionally refinished in Taos Turquoise acrylic lacquer. All the hardware is US-spec Fender with steel trem block and "PATENT PENDING" bridge saddles while the plastics are from Fender's '54 vintage re-issue line (set includes the "mini-skirt" knobs and "football" switch tip). The pickups are DiMarzio Virtual Vintage noiseless -- a mix of Heavy Blues II (neck), Heavy Blues (middle), and the now-OOP Solo Pro (bridge), with cloth push-back wiring, Oak/Grigsby switch, US-made Switchcraft output jack, and Russian milspec PIO .022mfd tone cap. Tuners are Kluson's single-line Deluxe split-posts and the string tree is a round Telecaster type. The guitar was built to resemble an early '55 edition.

The amp is a '66 Vibrolux Reverb with OEM Fender-marked Jensen C10NS ceramics. A previous owner had re-grilled it (badly I might add) with '68 cloth and added a '68 silverface front face plate. The innards were virtually unmolested. I had only to re-grill the amp with Rodger's "aged white" cloth and install a repro blackface control plate to bring the amp back to showroom-stock trim. With the Chicago-made Jensens it sounds heavenly -- a perfect mate to a Strat or Les Paul, probably a Tele as well.

I have a mid '68 Pro Reverb in the queue, awaiting routine maintenance and safety upgrades. All stock at this point, right down to it's tone-thieving Oxford 12L6 speakers. I have a pair of Fender-Marked Jensen C12NA's from 1967 earmarked for it, plus a set of F&T electrolytics, some new Allen & Bradley 470Ω resistors for the power-tube sockets, and a 16-foot grounded power cable. Just gotta get motivated......

    Re: Oh boys......I'm baaaack!

I played a GVCG blackguard tele through a Vibrolux Reverb like that, and it was the tone of the gods. Learned what a great Tele can bring to the table and taught me that 3 barrel bridge saddles don't suck after all. Been loving Tele guitars ever since.

As far as I know, Roger is like me: all about the strat and no humbucker in the bridge.

    Re: Oh boys......I'm baaaack!

I appreciate the humbucking feature of a humbucker pickup but the guitar has to look and sound like a Strat. Hence my affinity for DiMarzio's Virtual Vintage noiseless pickups. I have Fender's SCN's in a couple of guitars but they just don't have the authentic "strattitude" of the DM's.

I like the SSS of a Strat, but I wouldn't mind having a thicker bridge pickup, if I had a second Strat.

I'm surprised, but I know how much you love your Strats.

One of these would make a significant difference......

No fuss, no muss -- you can use your Strat's existing 250K volume and tone pots.

Just drop it in and RAWK.

That's the kind of advice that makes me so glad that you're back. I hope you feel welcome here. A lot of people have wished you'd return.

I'm a newbie by comparison, so I missed the Great Diaspora. But I agree, it's great to see this place becoming more active! I guess with everyone staying in due to the coronavirus, there's more time to spend on the computer, surfing the 'Net...
