Jazz Bass with Bartolini pickups and preamp is buzzing.

A friend's Jazz Bass with Bartolini pickups and a preamp is suddenly buzzing a lot. It's a pretty high pitch buzz. It goes away when you touch the control plate and knobs, but not the strings. The strings are not grounded. Would they typically be grounded in this type of setup?

What would cause an instrument like this to suddenly start buzzing. The Bartolinis and preamp have been in it for years, supposedly without buzzing.

Unfortunately, I have little experience with active instruments and don't know the model numbers for the pickups or the preamp.

Weird. I'd think, like in an EMG setup, the strings would be ground lifted.

That's what I assumed to I contacted Bartolini and just heard back from them a few minutes ago. They said that the strings should be grounded so I'll look at that more closely. It looks like there is a ground wire to the bridge and it is making contact, but it doesn't seem to be making contact in the control cavity. It's soldered to a plate in the cavity and disappears under the active electronics box.
