There's just nothing like the RAT

Ok, I tried a lot to get used to the Dunlop Custom Badass '78 Distortion. And yes, it's got a very nice palette of tones, but it just ain't fuzzy enough for my own taste.

Hello, my name is Sérgio and I am a RAT addict.

To me, strictly a single coil strat player, no other pedal gives me what I need. That hairy, fuzzy and definitely rough tone is all I go for.

I'm with you. Mine is great with every one of my guitars.

I've had so many Rats since buying my first in the mid '80s! I found one that's better than all the others and sold the rest. I love this thing!

Mine ne is one of the newer ones, probably late 90s but it slays any other dirt pedal when used with strats

I've got a couple Rats that I can't do without.
I keep 3 dirt boxes on my board, one for just a touch of hair, almost a boost, one for mild overdrive and one for full on - that's the Rat.
I'll swap the others in and out - I have a couple of each, but I haven't found anything that gets the sound in my head like that Rat. I have a second one as a backup that doesn't quite sound the same - I have to tweak that one to get close, but it's still a bit different.
I've had the old one for 25+ years at this point - and I can probably count on one hand the days it's been on the shelf.

I used to have a vintage rat.

Nice sounding pedal but the power and size sucked.

I have a Stomp Under Foot Skinner Box now (a copy of a very early Rat) and Ive had a few other "modern" rats. The Skinner and that old one have the sauce, the others were just generally good because they are rats. I paid like 80 dollars for that original rat and took it to a play at a friends house and he wouldnt let me leave until I sold it to him. I can't say I miss it, but only because that's not the sound in my head.

That being said, I have always loved Frisell using them:

To be clear I dont know with full certainty that Live to Tell is with a Rat but I had a Danocaster tele and the rat and a Carr Rambler and it sounded DEAD NUTS to this record. It even had the sag when you hit an open string and play over it.

Pretty magic sound tbh I just dont like anywhere near this much gain.

A modified Rat circuit. If you can pick it up cheap give it a shot. It's really a freaking monster.
