The Lazy, Hazy, Days of Summer Thread for Sunday, Aug. 18

This week it doesn't surprise me to be the thread-starter, as I'm up early today getting ready to run my first 5K in about six years.

I was an avid runner, completing a number of marathons, half marathons, ten-milers and other, assorted distances for over twenty years. I was injury-free for that time until 2011, when I did something to my hip during that year's Marine Corps Marathon. A year of physical therapy put me straight, but then I almost immediately tore the meniscus in my right knee, requiring another year of treatment. Fortunately, no surgery, but I was required to stop running.

Anyone who's a runner knows that if you don't keep at it, you lose your stamina, your wind, and your muscle tone. Coming back is really "starting over."

So, with my health in decline, running appealed to me on a number of points, so I've been taking to the roads and trails again. Gads, have I gotten slow!

But this morning I will engage in my first official 5K. I have my t-shirt and my number, and after breakfast I'm preparing, will head off to the race.

If I survive it, I'll let everyone know.

OS, I hope the run goes well for you!

After having trigger finger release surgery on my right hand a few weeks back I was finding it difficult to play bass for more than an hour or two. The surgeon set me up with a physical therapist and, after four days of following her directive, I managed to handle three hours of fairly intense playing on Thursday. Hopefully things will keep moving in a positive direction.

A relaxing Sunday is the plan today with Bloody Marys, breakfast and coffee with friends to start it off.

no rest for the wicked, alas. Just this morning I was filling out a task list of what needs to be done to each room before we sell the house. As my brother puts it, the prospect is like trying to eat a whole whale. The hard part is delegating, deciding who is capable of doing what and the even harder part, is when are they going to be able to do it? There are big things, like wall-to-wall carpet removal, that can't be done until the rooms are emptied. As long as we're emptying rooms, we need to distribute contents to their next destination, be that siblings' houses, Goodwill/Habitats for Humanity type places, or the dump. I'm probably going to have to rent a storage unit to keep my stuff in until the house sells. Something with real climate control so everything doesn't get destroyed by mold like my friend's stuff did.

Meanwhile I really need to start looking for a place to move to. I haven't done a single thing in that regard. I'm still in denial, I guess, that I won't be living here in the not so distant future. I had really hoped I could have had a year in the house by myself before we had to sell. My siblings are terrified that the hot seller's market will evaporate very soon. We kind of have a conflict of interests thing going on.

Laker, I have a high regard and deep respect for physical therapists. They sometimes remind me of the Marquis de Sade when they're working on me, but the end result is use of [body part here]! Glad you're able to play again.

I finished the 5K and made two of my three goals: I finished, and I didn't finish last (my third goal is to place in my age group, but that's reaching too high right now). Oh, and I didn't injure myself, so maybe I should say I made three of my four goals!

    Well done OS!

Normal Sunday here. It has been outrageously hot here the last couple of weeks. I’m trying to catch up on all the things I was too tired to do during the week. Oh well, life on the Gulf Coast!

    I hope y’all are well!

    What happend?

I didn't run a 5K or anything but I did spend 8 plus hours yesterday working on the stuff my nephew and I pulled down from the rafters the day before. This morning I looked at my health app and it said I walked 10018 steps or 3.7 miles. I only left the house to go grocery shopping, the rest was from activity inside. Which was a good thing because it was hot and humid before the thunderboomers came in.

No rest for the wicked, it resumes today and probably for the next 2-3 days after as well. I had drastically underestimated how much crap I managed to stash up there over the last 30 years.

next week will probably be emptying the crawl spaces of the attic. Then all the closets. It will be the last week I have my nephew available before he goes back to school.
